The SafeAgroMENA Project, hosted by IECC at Nile University and supported by the IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme with funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, successfully held its fourth and final Policy Dialogue titled: “A National Roadmap for Managing Pharmaceutical Residues in Egypt”

The dialogue marked the conclusion of the SafeAgroMENA Policy Dialogue Series on regulating pharmaceutical residues and emerging pollutants in Egypt’s agricultural water sector. Building on the outcomes of the previous dialogues, the session focused on consolidating key findings and recommendations into a unified and actionable roadmap to support evidence-based policymaking and sustainable water management practices.

The event opened with remarks from Prof. Alaa Eldin Adris (Steering Committee Chair), followed by an overview of the Policy Dialogue Series and reflections on the journey from baseline assessment and regulatory gap identification to roadmap development and economic analysis, presented by Dr. Mohamed Tawfik (NU Consultant) and Ms. Heba Hamed (NU Research Assistant).
Expert presentations were delivered by Dr. Ahmed Fathy (Fouder of MEDEX), Dr. Samia Galal (UN organizations Environment and Health senior consultant, Environmental Management Consultant,Prof. Emeritus of Environmental Engineering at the High Institute of Public Health Alex-Univ.), and Dr. Hadeel Hosney Senior Lecturer & Research (IHE Delft), highlighting perspectives on pharmaceutical waste management, environmental protection, and approaches for addressing emerging pollutants.

The dialogue also featured interactive working group discussions focused on implementation mechanisms, institutional coordination, stakeholder engagement, and communication strategies to support the adoption of the proposed roadmap.

As the final dialogue in the series, the session reinforced the importance of collaboration among policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, and development partners to advance practical solutions for managing pharmaceutical residues, protecting public health, and enhancing the sustainability of Egypt’s agricultural water sector.

Understanding Sustainability Compliance & Carbon Footprints for Global Markets
As part of the ClimaTech Training Day hosted by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank - Egypt in collaboration with Nile University – NilePreneurs, and aligned with the ClimaTech Accelerator 2025 vision toward a zero-waste future, we were honored to host Dr. Rehab Ali Sadek Central Director for Center of Excellence at General Organization for Export and Import Control, as a guest speaker for an insightful CBAM Awareness Session discussing the future of sustainability compliance, export readiness, and climate-conscious business practices.

The session explored how European sustainability regulations are increasingly shaping global trade and impacting Egyptian industries and exporters. Dr. Rehab highlighted key frameworks including CBAM, EUDR, DPP, PPWR, and CSRD/ESRS, explaining how businesses must adapt to evolving environmental and reporting requirements in order to remain competitive in international markets.

A major part of the discussion focused on carbon footprints and their growing importance across industries. Participants gained deeper insights into the different types of carbon footprints, including product carbon footprints, corporate carbon footprints, and individual carbon footprints, while understanding how each contributes to sustainability measurement and climate impact assessment.

The session also explained how companies measure and evaluate their carbon footprint through monitoring emissions generated across operations, manufacturing processes, supply chains, transportation, energy consumption, and product lifecycles. The discussion emphasized the importance of carbon accounting, emissions reporting, and sustainability data in helping companies improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and align with international export standards.

As part of the Safe Agro MENA Project hosted by the Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Competitiveness Center (IECC)
at Nile University marked a significant milestone in Egypt’s journey toward sustainable agriculture and water resilience.
The two-day engagement showcased tangible progress and real-world implementation.

Day One | Nile University
The team presented the project’s vision, milestones, and key achievements, highlighting the role of innovative solutions in addressing water reuse and food security challenges in Egypt.

Day Two | Fayoum
The engagement moved from discussion to action with the pilot launch of one of Egypt’s first decentralized treatment plants for agricultural drainage water at the farm level.
Built using locally sourced materials, the constructed wetland system enables sustainable water reuse, enhances food security, and supports small-scale farmers.

The launch coincided with World Wetlands Day, reinforcing the connection between local innovation and global environmental responsibility.
At a time when water scarcity remains one of Egypt’s most pressing challenges, decentralized and community-centered solutions like this pilot offer practical pathways toward long-term sustainability.

While this milestone represents significant progress, it also marks the beginning of a broader journey toward scalable and resilient water reuse practices across Egypt.

This achievement reflects the dedication of the SafeAgroMENA-Egypt team and the strong collaboration between national and international partners committed to advancing a more sustainable agricultural future.
