"Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in Agriculture: Challenges, Opportunities, Case Studies Analysis, and Way Forward"
The training was supported by the IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme and funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sessions were hosted at Hathor Hotel and Qena Water & Wastewater Company.
Throughout the two days, national experts shared sessions on sustainable water management in agriculture, featuring:

Eng. Ragab Arafa, President of Qena Water Company
Prof. Rifaat Abd Wahaab, Technical Advisor at HCWW
Dr. Hadeel Hosney, Senior Lecturer at IHE Delft
Eng. Marwa Saad, Research Assistant at Nile University

Topics ranged from safe reuse practices to fertilizer impacts on water quality, supported by local case studies.
Participants engaged in group exercises and site visits to explore real-world challenges and solutions.

This training serves as both a seed for future initiatives and a testament to the real demand for revisiting the Egyptian code on reusing treated wastewater in irrigated agriculture, an area where SafeAgroMENA is actively working.

Certificates were awarded at the conclusion of the training, acknowledging the valuable contributions of participants to the dialogue on sustainable water reuse.
We appreciate everyone who took part, a collaborative step toward smarter agricultural practices and environmental responsibility.

The SafeAgroMENA Project, hosted by IECC | Nile University, supported by the IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme with funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recently held its first Policy Dialogue under the title: “Current Situation & Risk Mitigation of Emerging Pollutants in Egypt.”

This workshop gathered experts, policymakers, researchers, and institutional representatives to address the growing challenge of emerging pollutants (EPs) in water and wastewater resources used for agriculture. The dialogue provided a platform to review the current regulatory and technical frameworks, share research findings, and explore practical strategies for risk mitigation.

The day’s discussions looked into several focus areas, including the geographical mapping of EPs in Egypt, key insights from past research and case studies, international benchmarks such as the WHO 2019 guidelines, and the regulatory implications of adopting new mitigation measures. Findings from 32 documented case studies were shared, revealing widespread exposure risks and significant regulatory gaps, particularly concerning pharmaceuticals and endocrine-disrupting compounds.
The sessions also highlighted the urgent need for updated national codes, stronger governance structures, and improved coordination between ministries, research institutions, and industry stakeholders.

The dialogue featured contributions from distinguished speakers including Prof. Alaa Eldin Adris, Steering Committee Chair for the SafeAgroMENA Project; Dr. Mohamed Tawfik, NU consultant in water governance and policy; and Dr. Gabriela Cuadrado-Quesada from IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. Ms. Heba Hefny, NU Research Assistant, presented an overview of the geographical mapping of emerging pollutants and related research outcomes, while Dr. Mohamed Dawood, Advisor for Environment Quality at the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi, delivered a keynote on the role of agroecological interventions in managing hazardous contaminants in treated water.

The IoT Bootcamp at Nile University, powered by the NilePreneurs Industry 4.0 Accelerator in partnership with QNB Egypt, didn’t stop at Nile University. The journey extended further as the startup teams spent a full training day inside QNB Egypt, where they engaged in complete sessions designed to link innovation with the financial and business tools they need to grow.

During this unique experience, the startups gained valuable exposure to the role of SMEs in the economy and the national initiatives that support their growth. They also discovered QNB Egypt’s non-financial services for entrepreneurs, learning how such offerings can guide them beyond funding. The teams explored how digital banking tools, like Digi bank, can simplify account opening processes, and they understood how to access business and POS solutions that are critical for operations. In addition, they received practical strategies to strengthen their e-commerce presence and accelerate scaling.

This day at QNB Egypt was not just a visit but a full training experience that supported the startups with actionable knowledge, bridging their innovative ideas with real-world financial solutions. It demonstrated how the Bootcamp is more than just technology-focused workshops; it is a holistic journey that prepares startups to grow and thrive in the market.

Are Your Technologies Truly Ready for the Market?

As part of the IoT Bootcamp launch at Nile University, powered by the NilePreneurs Industry 4.0 Accelerator in partnership with QNB Egypt, we wrapped up the program with a hands-on session on Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA), led by Amir Azmy, Senior System Engineer.

TRA isn’t just a checklist , it’s a strategic tool that helps startups bridge the gap between innovation and market success.

What Startups Explored
Startups were introduced to TRA as a structured, evidence-based method for evaluating the maturity, risk, and deployment readiness of hardware, software, and integrated technologies.

Through a practical 5-step framework, they learned how to:

- Identify Critical Technology Elements (CTEs)
- Assess maturity, novelty, and risk
- Assign Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs)
- Build a development roadmap
- Communicate findings and decisions

They also discovered how to translate business needs into actionable technical features, ensuring alignment between strategic goals and product development.

Expert Insight That Elevated the Session
Alongside Amir, Ahmed Saleh, Executive Director of IECC, played a key role in enriching the discussion.

Startups had the opportunity to:
- Benefit from Ahmed’s deep understanding of market dynamics and technology integration
- Clarify complex aspects of TRA that are often misunderstood or overlooked
- Understand how to align global innovation practices with Egypt’s real-world startup challenges

His strategic insights helped participants think beyond the technical process, focusing on how to bring innovation to market with confidence, clarity, and reduced risk.

Startup Interactions: Real Challenges, Real Conversations
One of the most valuable parts of the session was the interactive dialogue with startups working across IoT, AI, agri-tech, and mobility.

Startups engaged directly with the speaker and one another to:

- Map their technologies on the TRL scale
- Evaluate current risks and development gaps
- Share challenges related to market integration and deployment
- Discuss real-time applications of TRA to improve product strategies

These peer-to-peer insights transformed complex frameworks into actionable tools startups can apply immediately.

By the end of the session, startups left with more than knowledge, they walked away with a mindset of readiness, focused on validating their technology, managing risk, and aligning innovation with business goals.

Because success doesn’t come from just building new ideas, it comes from building them right.
