🎉💕Today is Pepina’s “Gotchya Day!” Let’s go back to May 7th, 2020, at the height of the pandemic - Olivia, our Community Director, and Dakota, our YLV, found a lil pup on the Center soccer field after leaving the comedor where they were making emergency food kits, coaxed her down to the house with some leftover lunch…and the rest is history 🥰

For those who haven’t been to the Center in the past 6 years, you’re missing out on a major addition to our - ask anyone here! Pepina Luna is loved so greatly and has brought so much joy to our volunteers, visitors, students & faculty/staff! She is such a gift to our community!

Today marks the 120th anniversary of the miracle of “La Dolorosa” 🌹

Our community celebrated in the festivities by attending (and singing) at one of the novena masses at la Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, staff joining an early morning rosary procession, and, today, we celebrated 11 teenagers making their first communion during our monthly all-school mass dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows! ❤️

O Mary, Mother of Sorrows,
pray for me in my trials and difficulties. Help me to carry my crosses with patience and to trust in God’s will. Stay with me in my suffering, and lead me always to your Son, Jesus. Amen.

*On April 20, 1906, 35 students and a teacher at the Colegio San Gabriel, witnessed a portrait of the Virgin Mary opening and closing her eyes for close to 15 minutes. The phenomenon was deemed miraculous by church authorities.

“The cross is the sign of victory, a symbol of salvation and of God’s love for us.” ✝️

We celebrated Holy Week with our “Family of Families” by hosting a procession to honor the stations of the cross, debuted a play directed by our YLVs, and our team enjoyed fanesca, a traditional Ecuadorian 12-grain soup. 💜

Good Friday invites us into a quiet, sacred space—a moment to pause and remember the depth of Christ’s sacrifice. It is a day that reminds us that love was poured out fully on the cross, even in the face of suffering and sorrow. What seemed like an ending was, in truth, the beginning of something greater. 🙏

❤️✨This week, we were able to celebrate all of the dedication, support and love that Madre Miguel and her sister, Pat Parks, gave the Center over decades. Their commitment to Padre Juan’s vision - empowering families in situations of vulnerability through values, community and education - shows us what it means to truly live your faith.

With deep gratitude for the hope fostered and the love shared, we celebrate these two women who helped create our “Family of Families!” 🙏

✝️Fr. Steve Planning, SJ - joining us from - concelebrated Ash Wednesday mass with Padre Tito García, SJ for our students, , volunteers, faculty & staff.

As we begin this Lenten season, let’s turn our focus back to what matters most: being people with and for others. We are invited to quiet the noise, loosen our grip on distractions, and come back to God, to love, to humility, and to who we were created to be. 💜

What an amazing and fun celebration we had with our students - a giant foam party & lots of smiles were shared 💙

*Carnaval in Ecuador is a major national holiday blending Catholic pre-Lenten traditions with Indigenous Andean celebrations of fertility, water, and the harvest (Pawkar Raymi). It represents a significant cultural fusion of signaling the end of the solar year, a time of communal abundance, and celebrated through playful “battles” involving water, flour, and foam.
