🇭🇹 HAITI played a CRUCIAL role in Ecuador’s path to independence.

After suffering military defeats, Simón Bolívar sought refuge in Haiti. Rather than turning him away, Haiti’s President, Alexandre Pétion, provided ships, weapons, supplies, funding, and even volunteers to help relaunch the fight against Spanish colonial rule.

Pétion asked for only one thing in return: that the people liberated during these campaigns would also be freed from slavery.

With Haiti’s support, and Haitians on the front line for their strength, Bolívar and his generals—including Antonio José de Sucre—continued the liberation movement that eventually led to Ecuador’s independence after the Battle of Pichincha in 1822.

While Ecuador itself did not yet exist as an independent nation when this happened, Haiti’s generosity helped make Ecuador’s independence POSSIBLE.

It’s a powerful reminder that one nation’s courage and willingness to help can change the course of history far beyond its own borders. Haiti’s contribution to Latin America’s freedom deserves to be remembered and honored.
