𝗘𝗰𝘂𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿: 𝗘𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗼́𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗶́𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼

Tras cinco años de investigación y monitoreo en nuestros bosques húmedos, compartimos con orgullo el hallazgo de cinco nuevas especies de orquídeas para la ciencia.

Este descubrimiento, realizado en las provincias de Esmeraldas, Tungurahua y Zamora Chinchipe, es el resultado de un esfuerzo constante por proteger los microclimas de los Andes tropicales. Desde la singular Lepanthes iris hasta las pequeñas y fascinantes Platystele, cada una representa el valor de la vida que aún queda por descubrir en nuestras reservas.

We are thrilled to announce the official description of 𝑪𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒂 𝒋𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒊, a striking new species of epiphytic shrub from the Ericaceae family (the Neotropical blueberries).

This discovery highlights the successful research partnership between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta, extending our conservation efforts beyond orchids to the broader, incredible flora of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Discovered in the cloud forests of Zamora Chinchipe, this plant was identified from material cultivated at our facilities. It is characterized by its elegant, pendent inflorescences with vibrant red-purple flowers.

Key Facts:

Name: The species is named in honor of José Luis Caamaño, recognizing his valuable participation in the field collection of this new species.

Habitat: It grows as an epiphyte in the cloud forests along the road to Nambija mines, at around 1550 meters above sea level.

Appearance: It features ovate leaves and stunning hanging flowers with a glaucous, red-purple corolla.

We are delighted to announce the official description of 𝐾𝑜𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑎𝑙𝑏𝑖𝑓𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑎, a spectacular new terrestrial orchid species from the province of Zamora Chinchipe in the Ecuadorian Amazon!

This colorful discovery is a result of the dedicated research collaboration between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta, continuing our mission to explore and document the extraordinary biodiversity of Ecuador.

The species name, albiflavoviola, perfectly captures its most striking feature: a beautiful combination of three colors derived from the Latin words albus (white), flavus (yellow), and viola (violet).

Key Features of this New Species:

Vibrant Flowers: The flowers display golden-yellow sepals and petals that contrast beautifully with a white lip adorned with prominent purple spots.

Terrestrial Habit: Unlike many orchids, this species grows terrestrially on roadside slopes and embankments.

Habitat: It thrives in the foothills of the Amazon at altitudes between 1000 and 1200 meters above sea level.

This significant publication is the result of the collaborative research between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta. It stands as a special tribute to our Executive President, Pepe Portilla, dedicating this species to him in recognition of his lifelong devotion to the research, conservation, and promotion of Ecuadorian orchids.

Key Features of this Amazonian Gem:

Distinctive Beauty: The flowers are odorless and feature a creamy white coloration marked with striking, thick purple transverse stripes.

Habitat: It grows as an epiphyte under the tree canopy in the primary forests of Pastaza Province, near the Bobonaza River, at low altitudes of 330 to 350 meters.

Comparison: While similar to 𝐾. 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑎, this new species is larger and distinguished by its unique coloration and floral structure.

This remarkable publication is the result of the successful and ongoing research collaboration between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta, reinforcing our commitment to documenting the rich, yet fragile, biodiversity of the Amazonian rainforests.

The species is named in honor of the province where it was found, Morona Santiago, where it grows epiphytically in primary forests at an altitude of 580 to 650 meters above sea level.

Key Features of this Rare Species:

Vibrant Coloration: It is distinguished by its creamy yellow flowers featuring bold, thick purple lines.

Unique Lip: The prominent 3-lobed lip is white with striking purple spots on the lateral lobes.

Flowering Season: It has been observed in bloom in cultivation from August to November.

This important publication is the result of the continuous and successful collaboration between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta, reinforcing our commitment to the ex-situ conservation and documentation of Ecuador's vast biodiversity. The plant was discovered during cultivation of material collected in Zamora Chinchipe.

The species is named 𝒄𝒉𝒓𝒚𝒔𝒐𝒌𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒔 from the Greek for "gold" and "beauty," referring to its beautiful golden flowers.

Key Features of this Rare Miniature:

"Golden Beauty" Flowers: This orchid features beautiful, golden flowers with yellow sepals and a yellow lip.

Habitat: It is an epiphytic orchid found in a primary forest near the Rio Manchinaza, at approximately 1500 meters.

Flowering: The plant produces solitary flowers in slow succession on the underside of the leaf.

This species was identified from material collected in Zamora Chinchipe Province, thriving in the cloud forest at around 1530 meters above sea level.

Key Features of this Rare Miniature:

Distinctive Flowers: The flowers are a notable brown, suffused with red, and its petals feature uncinate lobes—a key distinguishing feature.

The Name: The epithet 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑎 comes from the Greek for "two thorns" or "two spines," referencing the flower petals that have uncinate lobes on either side of the column.

Appearance: It has striking green leaves with inflorescences held on the upper side of the leaf blade.

We are excited to announce the official description of 𝐿𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠 𝑐ℎ𝑟𝑦𝑠𝑜𝑝𝑦𝑟𝑎 , a striking new orchid species from the Andes of Ecuador!

This discovery highlights the success of the ongoing research collaboration between Ecuagenera and the Fundación Angel Andreetta, furthering our mission to document the vast biodiversity of the Pleurothallidinae subtribe.

The new species was identified from material collected in Tzachilas, Santo Domingo canton. Its name, 𝑐ℎ𝑟𝑦𝑠𝑜𝑝𝑦𝑟𝑎 , comes from the Greek for "golden" and "fire/flame," a fanciful allusion to its unique flowers.

Key Features of this Rare Miniature:

"Golden Flame" Flowers: Orange-colored flowers with petals arranged like a little flame, featuring dull orange sepals and bright orange petals.

Distinctive Leaves: This species is noted for its beautiful, orbicular (round) leaves.

Habitat: An epiphytic orchid found growing on thin branches in the Santo Domingo area, at approximately 2000 meters above sea level.
