ALGERIAN HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANISATION
STATEMENT ON ALGERIA’S DECISION TO SEVER DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Algiers, 11 September 2026
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation (AHRO) closely follows the recent developments in Algerian-Emirati relations and, following the decision of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, expresses its strong and unequivocal support for this sovereign decision.
The Organisation considers this decision to be a legitimate exercise of Algeria’s sovereign right to safeguard its national security, territorial integrity, independence, and vital national interests.
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation reaffirms that respect for national sovereignty, independence of political decision-making, non-interference in the internal affairs of States, and respect for international law constitute fundamental principles of the international order and are firmly enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
In this context, the Organisation welcomes the firm position adopted by the Algerian authorities and expresses its full support for the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the exercise of his constitutional responsibilities in the field of foreign policy and in the defense of Algeria’s sovereignty and strategic interests.
The Organisation considers that the decision to sever diplomatic relations should be understood within the broader context of the deterioration of bilateral relations and the Algerian authorities’ stated position that diplomatic avenues and available means to preserve bilateral relations had been exhausted.
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation firmly believes that no State should be subjected to external pressure, interference, or actions that could undermine its sovereignty, national security, or independent decision-making, regardless of the source.
Algeria’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty of other States must be accompanied by reciprocal respect for Algeria’s sovereignty and independence.
PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation reaffirms its support for the fundamental principles that have historically guided Algeria’s foreign policy, including:
- Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States;
- Non-interference in the internal affairs of States;
- Respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations;
- The right of peoples to self-determination;
- Rejection of foreign interference, domination, and political pressure;
- The promotion of international peace, security, and stability;
- Support for legitimate national liberation and self-determination causes.
The Organisation stresses that defending national sovereignty and defending human rights are not contradictory objectives. On the contrary, respect for sovereignty, the rule of law, human dignity, and fundamental rights are interconnected principles that contribute to international peace and stability.
A CLEAR AND RESPONSIBLE POSITION
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation emphasizes that its position is directed exclusively at official policies and governmental decisions, and is in no way directed against the Emirati people, whom the Organisation continues to regard with respect and consideration.
The Organisation calls for maintaining the bonds of respect and fraternity between the Algerian and Emirati peoples and stresses the importance of distinguishing between disagreements and disputes between governments and the legitimate human relations that unite peoples.
At the same time, the Organisation considers that Algeria, as a sovereign State, has the full right to determine its foreign-policy orientations, partnerships, and diplomatic relations in accordance with its national interests and without external dictates.
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation therefore expresses its full support for the sovereign decision taken by the Algerian State, while reaffirming its commitment to the principles of international law, human rights, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the sovereignty of nations.
Algeria’s history demonstrates the importance it attaches to independence and national sovereignty. A country that paid an enormous price for its independence has the legitimate right to defend the independence of its decisions and its national interests.
Sovereignty is not a slogan.
Independence is not merely a historical memory.
And national decision-making is not subject to external dictates.
The Algerian Human Rights Organisation reaffirms its confidence in the institutions of the Algerian State and its support for every sovereign decision aimed at protecting Algeria’s national security, independence, and higher national interests.
Algeria is free, sovereign, and independent in its decisions.
