First Observation of the White-rumped Swift (Apus caffer) in Algeria
In mid-August 2026, naturalist Mourad Harzallah (an active member of the association) observed two White-rumped Swifts (Apus caffer) in eastern Algeria. Pending validation, this exceptional discovery would constitute the first known record of the species in Algeria.
The White-rumped Swift is a small apodid of primarily African origin. It is distinguished by its dark plumage, narrow white rump, slender silhouette, and distinctly forked tail. Careful identification is necessary to distinguish it from the Little Swift (Apus affinis), which is also present in Algeria but features a broader white rump and a less deeply notched tail.
The simultaneous observation of two individuals significantly enhances the ornithological importance of this record. While it could represent an exploratory movement, the possibility of settlement or even nesting cannot be ruled out. The White-rumped Swift frequently uses old Red-rumped Swallow nests, particularly under bridges, on buildings, or against rock faces.
This record is all the more remarkable given that the species was previously absent from the Algerian bird lists published on Oiseaux.net. However, its presence was predictable due to its establishment in Morocco, sightings in Tunisia, and recent expansion across the Mediterranean Basin.
Discreet monitoring of the site will be essential to confirm the birds' continued presence and to look for potential breeding evidence. If documented and officially approved, this observation by Mourad Harzallah will represent a major contribution to the knowledge of Algerian avifauna.
