World Humanitarian Day 2026: Protect those who protect humanity

💬 "Attacks on humanitarian workers aren't new, and they aren't slowing down. For years, the protection that emblem promises has been failing the people it was meant to protect".

In 2025
➡️ 332 humanitarians were killed in violent incidents around the world.
➡️ 99% of them were local staff and volunteers: the people already inside the community, the first to arrive and the last to leave.

📢 Guidance note: on MHPSS implications of out in , and

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub has published new translations of a resource in the short guidance note series – this time focusing MHPSS implications of wildfires.

💬 "Europe, Canada and the United States are currently experiencing some of the worst wildfires in recorded history. There are significant mental health implications from the impacts of wildfires, including the loss of lives, homes, belongings, pets, livestock, and feelings of safety. We have translated, into French and Spanish, a short guidance note enabling colleagues responding to wildfires to deliver psychosocial support to affected communities", says Shona Whitton, MHPSS Hub Technical Team Lead.

This guidance note is intended for Red Cross Red Crescent Movement components who may be responding to wildfires in their country, or region. It includes guidance on:

➡️ common reactions and behaviors during and after wildfires
➡️ integration of MHPSS considerations for disaster responses
➡️ links to existing relevant materials

📢 Three joint publications from International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub.

💬 When ICRC joined IFRC and the Danish Red Cross as tripartite partners and the MHPSS Hub was born, it was because we saw a clear and evident need to strengthen MHPSS across the Movement. We also identified significant opportunities to create synergies and pool our expertise and resources with partners to address this need. The three newly released joint publications illustrate that this was a correct analysis. We look forward to continuing the work to support the Movement in delivering on its ambition to ensure strong and much needed mental health support across the globe – not least in the regions affected by combinations of conflict, displacement and climate change, says Omar S. RASHEED, MHPSS Programme Coordinator for ICRC.

The publications include:
➡️Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Capacity Strengthening Framework
➡️Community-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Toolkit
➡️Review of the current evidence base for MHPSS in emergencies.

📢 Guidance note: on MHPSS implications of earthquakes out in and

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub has published a new resource in the short guidance note series – this time focusing MHPSS implications of earthquakes.

💬 We are aware that Red Cross Red Crescent colleagues on the frontlines of disaster responses are under an immense pressure and great time constraint. The guidance note series was designed to provide short operational guidance in these contexts of chaos and unpredictability where time and efficiency is essential. Given the recent series of devastating earthquakes in the Americas region we saw a need to provide an edition on this particular type of hazard and make a Spanish translation available,” says Shona Whitton, MHPSS Hub Technical Team Lead.

The guidance note is intended for Red Cross Red Crescent Movement components who may be responding to earthquakes in their country, or region. It includes guidance on:

➡️ common reactions and behaviors during and after earthquakes
➡️ integration of MHPSS considerations for disaster responses
➡️ links to existing relevant materials

📢 WEBINAR: Arts and Culture as Psychosocial Support in Emergencies: Ethnographic Insights from Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings

📅 DATE: 30 July
⏱️ TIME: 14:00 - 15:30 (CET)
🗺️ LOCATION: Online

This webinar organized by the Red Cross Red Crescent Research Network invites invites Dr. Albane Buriel to share insights based on participatory ethnographic fieldwork across Syria, Iraq, Mozambique, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Dr. Albane Buriel’s PhD study argues that arts-based and cultural practices must be integrated as a structurally embedded pillar of emergency Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) rather than being marginalized as secondary, recreational activities. The findings demonstrate that while creative practices foster vital, non-pathologizing spaces for agency, dignity, and collective healing, their transformative benefits are not automatic; instead, they depend entirely on specific pedagogical, relational, and facilitation conditions. Ultimately, the research calls for stronger ethical frameworks, long-term programming, and specialized practitioner training to address key challenges such as power asymmetries, the instrumentalization of art, and the emotional exposure of facilitators in crisis environments.

This webinar will aim to answer a set of questions including:
➡️ How do arts-based practices generate distinct, non-pathologizing psychosocial spaces compared to conventional MHPSS?
➡️ What specific pedagogical and relational conditions are required for artistic activities to achieve transformative psychosocial effects?
➡️ What ethical tensions and power asymmetries arise when arts-based practices are integrated into humanitarian programming?

This session will be moderated by Dr. Yasin Duman, Research Specialist at the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub.
