📢 EASNIE recognised for its long-standing commitment supporting inclusive education in Europe

The European Commission's new Communication on Enhancing the Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities up to 2030 reaffirmed EASNIE as a key partner in advancing disability-inclusive lifelong learning across Europe.

As part of a flagship initiative ‘Disability-inclusive lifelong learning’, the Communication highlights the importance of:

➡️ Mutual learning on disability-inclusive education
➡️ Co-operation within the European Education Area
➡️ Building inclusive pathways from early childhood education through to lifelong learning and employment

This recognition reflects EASNIE's long-standing commitment to supporting countries in developing more inclusive education systems and ensuring that all learners have the opportunity to thrive.

The Communication also reinforces priorities that are central to our work, including the links between inclusive education, lifelong learning, skills development and employment.

EASNIE looks forward to continuing our collaboration with EU Member States and partners to strengthen inclusive education for all.

🌍 EASNIE Webinar: Inclusive Education in the World of Artificial Intelligence

🤖 How can artificial intelligence support more inclusive education systems?

The sixth webinar in our series will bring together experts to explore how AI is transforming education and what this means for inclusion, equity and learner participation.

As education systems increasingly adopt digital and AI-powered tools, the discussion will consider both the opportunities and challenges that come with these technologies. Topics will include personalised learning, accessibility, ethical governance and the role of technology in responding to the diverse needs of learners.

We are pleased to welcome:

• Richard Culatta, CEO of International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
• Katri Saarikivi, cognitive neuroscientist, CEO of Samoi, and the head of science communication in the FINSCI research project.

Drawing on a neuroscientific perspective on diversity, the webinar will explore the brain mechanisms that support learning and the natural variability that exists between learners. The discussion will examine how current and emerging technologies could help create more differentiated learning experiences, while also considering their limitations and potential risks.

Importantly, the session will reflect on the continuing role of teachers, professional judgement and school communities in ensuring that technology serves inclusion rather than replacing the human relationships at the heart of education.

💻 Pillar 6: Digital Transformation and AI

Digital transformation is no longer an optional addition to education systems, it is becoming a defining factor in how learners access, experience and participate in education.

As part of its 30th anniversary reflections, EASNIE developed the Ten Pillars Shaping the Future of Inclusive Education to identify the system-level actions needed to advance equity, participation and inclusion. Pillar 6 focuses on ensuring that digital transformation and artificial intelligence support these goals rather than deepen existing inequalities.

Research and policy evidence from the European Union, UNESCO, the OECD and EASNIE all point to the same conclusion: digital technologies have enormous potential to personalise learning, improve accessibility and support diverse learners. However, these benefits can only be realised through equitable access, strong digital and media literacy, ethical governance and high-quality professional learning for educators.

The pillar emphasises three key actions:

✔ Ensure equitable access to digital tools, infrastructure and connectivity.
✔ Promote media literacy, critical thinking and safe digital participation.
✔ Harness AI for personalised learning and system efficiency while ensuring transparency, accountability and ethical safeguards.

Ultimately, digital tools should enhance human development, strengthen learner agency and support participation in an increasingly complex digital world.

🌍 EASNIE Webinar: Inclusive Education and School Leadership

How can school leaders drive meaningful, inclusive change?

The fifth webinar in our series brought together international and school-level perspectives to explore how leadership can help create more inclusive education systems.

Throughout the discussion, participants reflected on the role of leadership in shaping school culture, aligning policy with classroom realities and ensuring that inclusive values are reflected in daily practice.

Among the key messages highlighted during the webinar:

• Inclusive leadership starts with a shared vision grounded in equity, participation and belonging.
• Creating inclusive schools requires more than commitment; it requires reliable structures, collaborative practices and continuous reflection.
• Leadership should be understood as a collective process that engages staff, learners and wider school communities.
• Meaningful participation means ensuring learners have genuine opportunities to influence decisions and contribute to their educational experience.
• Inclusive education is fundamental to delivering high-quality learning environments where every child can thrive.

Many thanks to Manos Antoninis, Director of UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, and Mareike Klauenflügel, Principal of IGS Herder in Frankfurt, for their valuable contributions to this important conversation.

What happens when learners are given the tools to document and reflect on their own school experiences?

As part of the Learner Participation in Inclusive Education (LPIE) activity, teachers, learners, researchers and policy-makers from six countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal and Scotland in the UK) explored how the photovoice methodology can support more inclusive education.

📸Using photography as a participatory tool, learners captured images representing their feelings, environments, relationships and experiences within school communities.

These visual reflections opened meaningful discussions around well-being, participation, accessibility and belonging, particularly for learners vulnerable to exclusion.

Teachers involved in the pilot projects highlighted how the process encouraged stronger student engagement, ownership and dialogue, while also offering valuable qualitative insights often missing from traditional monitoring and evaluation approaches.

📅 Join the final LPIE dissemination webinar, taking place on Tuesday 2 June 2026 from 13:00 to 14:30 CET to learn more about the project, with reflections and feedback from key project leads across Europe.

The webinar will open with a keynote speech by Professor Alan Dyson on learner participation. Teachers, data analysts and policy-makers involved in the pilot projects will then share their experiences, findings and key messages emerging from the activity.
