For home-based workers in Uganda, access to affordable credit is one of the biggest barriers to growing a business. Banks are rarely an option, with strict loan conditions, high interest rates, and a stressful application process. For members of Ngalo Buwereza Organisation (NBO), that is changing.

With support from RAISE, NBO has established its own SACCO, a community-governed savings and credit cooperative serving its 126 member organisations and more than7,000 individual members across Uganda.

The loans are small, often around DKK 850, but the impact is real. A women’s weaving group has doubled the price of their baskets by investing in better materials. A soap-producing group has increased weekly sales fivefold through bulk purchasing and better packaging. A fish-farming group has expanded production while turning waste into compost for vegetable gardens.

Vi er her for at fortælle om vores arbejde med at sikre, at flere mennesker har adgang til social protection og en indkomst de kan leve af.

Vi fundraiser også til vores partnerorganisation Ngalo Buwereza Organisation (NBO), et netværk af 126 medlemsorganisationer med mere end 7.000 hjemmearbejdere fra hele Uganda. NBO arbejder for at styrke rettighederne og levevilkårene for kvinder og mænd, der arbejder i Ugandas uformelle sektor.

Today we held our first inception meeting for our new three-year programme, Catalyzing Change: Strengthening Civil Society Capacity and Collaboration for Social Protection Research and Advocacy — and we are looking very much forward to the collaboration ahead.

The programme brings together five partners across five countries: Initiative for Social and Economic Rights (ISER) in Uganda, Institute For Economic Justice (IEJ) in South Africa, Cedos in Ukraine, ESI Consulting Group NGO (Hasmik Ghukasyan) in Armenia , and Arunala Institute in Indonesia.

Together, we will work to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to carry out high-quality research and effective advocacy — with the shared goal of improving access to social protection for vulnerable groups in each of the partner countries.

We are proud to be working with such dedicated and experienced partners, and we look forward to three years of collaboration across borders.

Lumiere Nsimire is a mother of nine — five of her children attend Bukere Primary School in the Kyaka II refugee settlement. Today, she plays a key role in running the school’s insect production facility 🐛🐛

Her story reflects the success of mealworm production at the school — driven by strong engagement from both students and parents.

To engage students, the school has established an insect club where children learn about nutrition while actively participating in production. This hands-on approach builds responsibility, strengthens science skills, and has contributed to improved academic performance and participation in science competitions.
Beyond the classroom, students share their knowledge with their families, helping to spread awareness across the wider community.

With support from our partner MAMAH, Bukere Primary School has established a sustainable mealworm production system as part of our RefIPro project.

However, challenges remain. Many families still cannot afford school meals or provide maize bran for porridge, and recent reductions in support from the World Food Programme — which previously provided regular food assistance to refugees — have made the situation even more difficult.

At RAISE, we are exploring how to create a more sustainable and inclusive school feeding system — one that reaches all children and supports the parents who are struggling to make ends meet. If you have ideas, insights, or would like to connect on this, we would be very happy to hear from you.

In May, RAISE travelled to Myanmar for a final evaluation visit of our insect farming project. 🇲🇲

The project supports small-scale farmers in the delta south of Yangon to produce Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as an affordable and locally produced source of feed for fish ponds and livestock — reducing dependence on expensive commercial feed and strengthening the livelihoods of farming households 🪲

The primary purpose of the visit was to conduct interviews with project partners, staff, and — most importantly — the farmers themselves, across two different locations.

It was encouraging to see how many of the farmers have successfully mastered the full lifecycle of insect production. The larvae have become an integral part of their farming systems: chickens fed on BSFL grow noticeably faster and produce significantly more eggs, while the frass — the organic by-product of larvae production — has proven highly effective as fertiliser for fruit trees and rice fields.

We look forward to sharing results from the project when it concludes later this year.

Earlier this year, RAISE launched a new project in Armenia 🇦🇲

In partnership with ESI Consulting Group NGO and supported by CISU - Civilsamfund i Udvikling / Civil Society in Development, we are working in Vayk Municipality to strengthen the link between social protection and labour market pathways for refugees and other vulnerable groups.

While Armenia has formally prioritised integrating social protection and labour market policies at the national level, most municipalities — including Vayk —currently lack the tools, capacity, and coordination needed to translate these priorities into practice. At the same time, local civil society organisations hold valuable knowledge of vulnerable groups and their needs, but are rarely engaged in formal policy processes.

The project brings together municipal authorities, state agencies, civil society, and community actors to co-design a Local Social Plan — one that links social protection with active labour market measures and creates real pathways from passive assistance to participation and income.

The goal is a more coordinated, evidence-based, and inclusive local social protection system that opens up opportunities for vulnerable residents to access both social support and sustainable income.

Home-based workers — people who produce goods or services from their own homes — are among the most overlooked groups in Uganda’s informal economy. Limited income, poor working conditions, and lackof access to capital make it difficult to build financial security.

Together with our Ugandan partner Ngalo Buwereza Organization (NBO), we are working to change that.

Since autumn, we have raised DKK 16,300 to strengthen NBO’s savings and credit cooperative (SACCO), which provides home-based workers with access to small loans and savings schemes — enabling them to invest in their production, stabilise their income, and build greater financial security.

The funds were raised through our membership campaign, where all membership contributions went directly to NBO — so a big thank you to all our existing and new members for making this possible. We also received generous support from Merkurfonden, which helped strengthen the SACCO further.

We look forward to continuing our work with NBO to improve conditions for home-based workers in Uganda.

Har du lyst til at arbejde med international udvikling i praksis — og særligt med research og analyse?

Vi søger en praktikant med fokus på at understøtte vores analytiske arbejde inden for social protection og jobskabelse i Uganda, Georgien, Myanmar og Armenien.

Som praktikant vil du primært bidrage med:
- Litteraturreviews og analyser inden for social protection og jobskabelse
- Research til rapporter og projektudvikling
- Kvalitative og kvantitative evalueringer

Du er formentlig studerende på statskundskab, internationale studier, antropologi eller lignende — og du har lyst til at bringe dine analytiske kompetencer i spil i en reel organisatorisk kontekst.

In March, the RAISE team travelled to Uganda for a supervision visit across four of our active projects.

One of the main purposes of the trip was to evaluate our four-year insect farming project, RefIPro, which supports refugees in the Kyaka II settlement to produce Black Soldier Fly Larvae as a source of income - and mealworms as nutrition for children in local schools. The project is funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation and implemented together with our partner Mamah Mothers Against Malnutrition and Hunger.

We brought in external consultant Rolf Hernø to lead the evaluation process - and we are very pleased with both the collaboration and the evaluation he has delivered. When the project concludes later this year, we look forward to sharing more results and learnings from four years of insect farming in Uganda.

While in Uganda, we also gathered data for our second project with MAMAH - Insect Scale - which focuses on making insect farming more sustainable through organic waste collection systems and savings and loan schemes for farmers.

The trip also gave us the opportunity to meet with two of our other Ugandan partners: National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU), with whom we work to establish social protection for families with children with disabilities, and Initiative for Social and Economic Rights (ISER), where our focus is on strengthening social protection for older persons.

We place great value on visiting our partners in the field. These meetings consistently reaffirm the importance of in-person collaboration - and remind us of the progress being made on the ground.
