Vi tager af sted med to formål:
1️⃣ Vi er der for at møde en masse studerende og fortælle om vores arbejde til nogle, der måske ikke kender os endnu.
2️⃣ Derudover søger vi frivillige og praktikanter til foråret 2027, som har lyst til at arbejde med udviklingsarbejde og social sikkerhed i praksis.

From festival leftovers to a savings fund in Uganda 🇺🇬

What do a leftover tent, a few camping chairs and some unopened drinks have to do with women building small businesses in Uganda?

After the recent SMUK Festival, Elise Anesen and her family collected items left behind at the festival, including tents, chairs, drinks and snacks, and sold them on. The result? 3,333 DKK, which they chose to donate to RAISE.

Together, we decided that the donation should support our partner, NBO (Ngalo Buwereza Organisation), a network in Uganda that supports groups, mostly women, running small businesses producing woven baskets, bags, soap and peanut butter.

NBO has established a joint savings and loan fund, giving its members a safer and more accessible way to borrow money for their businesses than traditional banks can offer.

And in this context, even small amounts can go a long way.

One group of members recently received a loan of just 850 DKK. They used it to buy better materials, improving the quality of their baskets. The result? Baskets that previously sold for 35 DKK can now be sold for 85 DKK, leading to more orders and a higher income for the women behind them.

At RAISE, we are deeply grateful when others see the value in our partners’ work and choose to support it, especially in creative ways like this one.

Warm welcome to our new interns! 🌱

This September, RAISE is delighted to welcome three new colleagues to our team.

Astrid and Anna join us as interns for the rest of the year, alongside Emma, who is with us for a company internship throughout September.

👉🏽 Astrid is completing her Master’s in Political Science at Aarhus University, where she has specialized in development work. She’ll be supporting our team with research across our current and upcoming projects.

👉🏽 Anna is pursuing a Master’s in Media Studies at Aarhus University and joined RAISE to gain hands-on insight into how a small NGO operates. She will lead communication across our channels and help shape RAISE’s communication strategy going forward.

👉🏽 Emma completed her Master’s in International Studies at Aarhus University this summer, with a strong interest in the regions where RAISE works. She’ll contribute to evaluating our recently completed projects and help develop RAISE’s strategy and vision within our job creation pillar.

It’s always energizing to bring new perspectives into the team — and this autumn is set to be a busy one, as we wrap up several projects, launch new initiatives, and continue building on our ongoing work.

Welcome, Astrid, Anna and Emma — we’re glad to have you on board!

🇺🇬 On 27 August, RAISE joined NUDIPU and UNAPD in Kampala to train Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) on Uganda’s brand-new National Child Assistance Programme.

The National Child Assistance Programme is a new national flagship programme for children with disabilities, combining a range of services with a monthly cash benefit for families of children with severe disabilities.

As the programme moves towards piloting in 2027, it is essential that OPDs understand its design and implementation. This will enable them to play an active role in monitoring the programme and advocating for the resources needed to expand it.

The training had two main aims:
1️⃣ To equip OPDs with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively monitor the programme
2️⃣ To create space for reflection and discussion on advocacy strategies for securing the budget needed to expand the programme towards full national coverage in the coming years

🙌🏽 We were thrilled to see such strong engagement from the participating OPDs, who used the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns about the programme.

The message from the day was clear: the National Child Assistance Programme cannot succeed without OPDs being actively involved and having a clear understanding of its design. And once implementation begins, its success will depend on the presence of OPDs in the districts – close to the very families the programme is intended to reach.

We're excited to share that RAISE has been granted a new project in Ukraine 🇺🇦

Common Ground: Developing Third Places for Social Cohesion in Ukraine is a new project developed together with Cedos – NGO Centre for Society Research, and supported by CISU - Civilsamfund i Udvikling- Civilsamfund i Udvikling / Civil Society in Development.

The war in Ukraine has disrupted everyday life and weakened trust between people. Close to 4.6 million Ukrainians are internally displaced, and more than 1.3 million have served in the armed forces — both groups now face the task of rebuilding not only their lives, but also their sense of belonging.

Together with Cedos and local partners in Boyarka, Nizhyn and Dovhe, we will strengthen three community centres as inclusive "third places," and build the capacity of Ukrainian civil society to design and run similar spaces across the country.

We are proud to deepen our collaboration with Cedos, and we look forward to the work ahead.

For home-based workers in Uganda, access to affordable credit is one of the biggest barriers to growing a business. Banks are rarely an option, with strict loan conditions, high interest rates, and a stressful application process. For members of Ngalo Buwereza Organisation (NBO), that is changing.

With support from RAISE, NBO has established its own SACCO, a community-governed savings and credit cooperative serving its 126 member organisations and more than7,000 individual members across Uganda.

The loans are small, often around DKK 850, but the impact is real. A women’s weaving group has doubled the price of their baskets by investing in better materials. A soap-producing group has increased weekly sales fivefold through bulk purchasing and better packaging. A fish-farming group has expanded production while turning waste into compost for vegetable gardens.

Vi fundraiser også til vores partnerorganisation Ngalo Buwereza Organisation (NBO), et netværk af 126 medlemsorganisationer med mere end 7.000 hjemmearbejdere fra hele Uganda. NBO arbejder for at styrke rettighederne og levevilkårene for kvinder og mænd, der arbejder i Ugandas uformelle sektor.

Today we held our first inception meeting for our new three-year programme, Catalyzing Change: Strengthening Civil Society Capacity and Collaboration for Social Protection Research and Advocacy — and we are looking very much forward to the collaboration ahead.

The programme brings together five partners across five countries: Initiative for Social and Economic Rights (ISER) in Uganda, Institute For Economic Justice (IEJ) in South Africa, Cedos in Ukraine, ESI Consulting Group NGO (Hasmik Ghukasyan) in Armenia , and Arunala Institute in Indonesia.

Together, we will work to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to carry out high-quality research and effective advocacy — with the shared goal of improving access to social protection for vulnerable groups in each of the partner countries.

We are proud to be working with such dedicated and experienced partners, and we look forward to three years of collaboration across borders.

Lumiere Nsimire is a mother of nine — five of her children attend Bukere Primary School in the Kyaka II refugee settlement. Today, she plays a key role in running the school’s insect production facility 🐛🐛

Her story reflects the success of mealworm production at the school — driven by strong engagement from both students and parents.

To engage students, the school has established an insect club where children learn about nutrition while actively participating in production. This hands-on approach builds responsibility, strengthens science skills, and has contributed to improved academic performance and participation in science competitions.
Beyond the classroom, students share their knowledge with their families, helping to spread awareness across the wider community.

With support from our partner MAMAH, Bukere Primary School has established a sustainable mealworm production system as part of our RefIPro project.

However, challenges remain. Many families still cannot afford school meals or provide maize bran for porridge, and recent reductions in support from the World Food Programme — which previously provided regular food assistance to refugees — have made the situation even more difficult.

At RAISE, we are exploring how to create a more sustainable and inclusive school feeding system — one that reaches all children and supports the parents who are struggling to make ends meet. If you have ideas, insights, or would like to connect on this, we would be very happy to hear from you.

In May, RAISE travelled to Myanmar for a final evaluation visit of our insect farming project. 🇲🇲

The project supports small-scale farmers in the delta south of Yangon to produce Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as an affordable and locally produced source of feed for fish ponds and livestock — reducing dependence on expensive commercial feed and strengthening the livelihoods of farming households 🪲

The primary purpose of the visit was to conduct interviews with project partners, staff, and — most importantly — the farmers themselves, across two different locations.

It was encouraging to see how many of the farmers have successfully mastered the full lifecycle of insect production. The larvae have become an integral part of their farming systems: chickens fed on BSFL grow noticeably faster and produce significantly more eggs, while the frass — the organic by-product of larvae production — has proven highly effective as fertiliser for fruit trees and rice fields.

We look forward to sharing results from the project when it concludes later this year.
