🚨 Every day, between 15,000 and 24,000 women experience maternal morbidity related to pregnancy and childbirth.

When we talk about maternal health, we often focus on maternal mortality—rightfully so, since around 800 women die from preventable causes related to
pregnancy and childbirth daily, according to 2020 numbers. But morbidity is critical as well. For every woman who dies during pregnancy or childbirth, it is estimated that 20-30 women endure serious complications that can have lasting effects on their health and quality of life.

Quality maternal healthcare is key to safer births and safeguarding mothers' health and well-being. At Maternity Foundation, we’re committed to ending preventable maternal mortality, morbidity, and harm by empowering midwives and other healthcare professionals with innovative training programmes and our Safe Delivery App—ensuring they have the tools, skills and knowledge to provide essential care.

📢We are thrilled to see our CEO Anna Frellsen featured in Jyllands-Posten, alongside the Global Health Alliance expert group, in a joint op-ed advocating for Denmark to strengthen its efforts in global health.

The op-ed is based on the expert group's joint report launched in December, containing 19 concrete recommendations for Denmark to become a global leader in health. Not only to save lives in the world’s most vulnerable regions but also to enhance Denmark's own security and reduce the risk of future global health crises.

Et styrket dansk engagement i global sundhed er nødvendigt – ikke blot for at redde liv i de mest udsatte dele af verden, men også for at styrke Danmarks egen sikkerhed og reducere risikoen for den næste globale sundhedskrise.

Maternity Foundation is advancing its pilot testing on leveraging AI technology to promote safer childbirth in collaboration with the Indian authorities, Neuvo Inc. Global, Aastrika Foundation, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Organon.

The idea is to integrate an AI-powered smartbot into the Safe Delivery App. The pilots done in India where the app has 197500+ downloads to date.

The Safe Delivery App serves as both a practical job aid and a training tool for midwives and healthcare professionals. With the integration of the AI-powered smartbot, users can now ask questions on the Safe Delivery App content and receive timely, evidence-based answers on pregnancy and childbirth.

The AI-powered smartbot, named the NeMa smartbot, aims to enhance support for healthcare professionals by making it easier to quickly access critical information, enabling them to deliver more efficient and improved care to women and babies during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.

In the last round of pilots in India, we have been testing the NeMa smartbot on a full version of the Safe Delivery App with 49 midwives as participants from two state midwifery institutions in India. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Learn more about the feedback from the midwives taking part in the pilots. in our new website story!

As we enter 2025, we are reminded that only five years remain to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, including the critical target of reducing the global maternal mortality rate to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births.

However, the latest data highlights an urgent need for accelerated action. At the current pace, the global maternal mortality rate is projected to reach 222 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030—more than three times the SDG target.

At Maternity Foundation, our commitment to improving access to safe births and supporting midwives and healthcare professionals worldwide remains unwavering. In 2025, we renew our determination to close the gaps in maternal and newborn care, strengthen health systems, and drive innovation for meaningful impact.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners, collaborators, and supporters. Your contributions propel our mission forward, enabling us to achieve greater milestones together.

Let’s make 2025 a year of renewed determination, shared vision, and tangible progress. Together, we can ensure safer births for mothers and newborns – everywhere!

We are enhancing the Papua New Guinea version of the Safe Delivery App with four additional modules on antenatal care, postnatal care, perinatal mental health, and modern contraception.

The Safe Delivery App is designed to support midwives and other healthcare professionals, focused primarily on how to manage childbirth and common complications. The Papua New Guinea version has been tailored to align with national clinical guidelines and has been developed in partnership with the Burnet Institute, the Kirby Institute and UNFPA. It now has 17 modules which support midwives and other healthcare professionals in providing quality care to mothers and their babies before, during and after birth.

The importance of this initiative is underlined by Papua New Guinea's high maternal and neonatal mortality rates, among the highest in the Asia-Pacific region.

To ensure its effective use, the launch of the Safe Delivery App has been accompanied by extensive training for midwives and other healthcare professionals, including a "training of trainers" session which empowered select midwives to become trainers themselves, enabling the dissemination of knowledge and skills across the country.

You can download the English version of the app adapted to Papua New Guinea's clinical guidelines on Google Play and App Store.

For midwives serving the remote islands of the Philippines, the challenges are immense — scarce resources, vast distances to hospitals, and lack of access to updated knowledge and skills to manage birth complications. In such contexts, the Safe Delivery App can be a lifeline offering essential guidance to midwives when it matters most.

The Safe Delivery App provides guidance on how to handle birth and common complications. It is free and once downloaded, it even works offline. In addition to functioning as a job aid, users can access the app’s MyLearning platform to practice and test their knowledge interactively and at their own time and pace.

Agnes Macan, a retired midwife with 41 years of experience, recalls how the app transformed her practice. “The Safe Delivery App helped me manage high-risk deliveries when access to hospitals was impossible. It gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed.” Even after decades of experience, she valued the app for its ability to update her knowledge and support her in emergencies.

Maternity Foundation’s work in the Philippines started in 2017, in collaboration with the Andres Soriano Foundation. Together, we’ve supported midwives and healthcare professionals in remote areas like Agutaya, Cuyo, and Magsaysay, improving knowledge and confidence by over 20% in the first year. In 2024, the Andres Soriano Foundation trained 63 healthcare professionals in 10 coastal and island villages and continues to do so using the Safe Delivery App.

We look forward to exploring how even more midwives in remote communities can make use of the Safe Delivery App.
