AfriCAN AfriCAN is a Danish membership based NGO, that works to create a just world with focus on Africa and Filosofien om hjælp til selvhjælp er således central.

AfriCAN søsatte udviklingsprojektet EduAfrica i oktober 2012.
• Personen laver frivilligt arbejde

The membership-based NGO, AfriCAN, was founded in October 2012. The organization consists of a board, a secretariat and a couple of committees filled with people, who share a love for Africa and development in general. These people are the base of AfriCAN and their resources are used to create a strong organization, which is transparent to its members and companies. In an attempt to stand out from the crowd of NGO's, AfriCAN emphasizes on alternative target groups e.g. tertiary students, who seek to complete a further and higher education and take active parts in educational governance at learning institutions. AfriCAN's work is built upon the philosophy of empowerment following the wish for sustainable development. The reason that we prioritize sustainable solutions and methods is the recognition that AfriCAN, as a Western NGO, is not intended to save Afrika, but rather try to promote the socioeconomical potential Africa holds to bring about a stable, bright future for the people of Africa. AfriCAN launched the development project, EduAfrica, in October 2012. It is a sponsorship project, which aims to give young African students the opportunity and economic resources to attain higher education. It is intended to create better job opportunities and chances for economic stability with local anchorage. AfriCAN works with local partners such as Civil Society Institutional Foundation (CSIF-Ghana). The partners jointly identify young students, who are already active in their local societies. The local anchorage is important, as it ensures AfriCAN that a sponsorship of their education is an investment in the local society and its potential for development. A sponsorship involves full economic support and personal support throughout the entire course of the education, which gives the student the needed support to finish the education. EduAfrica works with 5 criteria for selection. These are formulated by both the local partner and AfriCAN:

• The person must be between 20-35 years old
• The person volunteers for the partner organisation other organissations
• The person is active in the local society
• The person must have started a higher education
• The person intends to work in the local society after finishing the education. The students are selected based on personal interviews with AfriCAN and the local partner in order to ensure their understanding of EduAfrica's values. This includes the idea that the education has to create change and development with local anchorage. The students' subject areas span through the field of nursing to teachers and IT-education. But all in all, the subject areas share a common denominator that is to say that they all have the propensity benefit the local society. EduAfrica is founded on the idea that education produces people with capacities whose involvement in the local society can help a country out of poverty. With EduAfrica, AfriCAN intends to give the students the opportunity to create a sustainable future for themselves and for Africa. The philosophy of empowerment is crucial. EduAfrica starts in Ghana, but in the long run we intend to expand the support scheme to other African countries to the extent it is economically possible. Top priority remains to establish EduAfrica as a economically stable project in Ghana before a possible expansion. Do you share our values and can you identify yourself as a volunteer in AfriCAN? Volunteers are bedrock of our organization for which reason we encourage you to join us. You can contact us on our homepage, www.afri-can.dk, where you will also find more information about our organization, AfriCAN, how you can become member, and our project, EduAfrica.

Our Ghanaian partner shares a story of how women are chaning the narrative

Meet Madam Memunatu, an assembly woman at the Nawuni electoral area, she shared her story as a woman coming from a deep rooted gendered society, her challenges are more than you can imagine. Madam Memunatu couldn't get the opportunity to have a good formal education but that didn't deter her from participating in the local assembly elections which she emerged victorious. Kudos to madam Memuna and all women striving to make a difference.

Sponsored by CISU..

The Student Leadership and Engagement Project (SLEP) is designed to help student leaders to acquire leadership skills, build organizational structures, policy papers and reflect over what their associations are and how student leaders who serve as mouthpiece of students can speak for and on behalf of their own members. When student leaders know what to communicate and how to communicate, their voices will increase student participation in educational governance and thereby strengthen the democracy in the schools which could have an impact on the larger democratic society. The project has a special focus on female students and set out core activities to give voice to female student leaders.
