Tropentag 2022:
Towards shifting paradigms in agriculture for a healthy and sustainable future
September 14 - 17, 2021, organised by ATSAF e.V., Germany

The annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural development (TROPENTAG) is jointly organised by the universities of Berlin, Bonn, Göttingen, Hohenheim, Kassel-Witz

enhausen, ZALF e.V., Ghent University (Belgium), Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic), BOKU Vienna (Austria) and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V) in co-operation with the GIZ Advisory Service on Agricultural Research for Development (BEAF). Due to the current Corona pandemic Tropentag 2021 will be organised as a virtual conference by ATSAF e.V., Germany. However, dependent of the pandemic development, the organisers will try to have livestream presentations, coming from lecture halls at our main partner universities (with a limited personal attendance of participants active at these sites). Further, parallel sessions will be organised in form of webinars or similar and pre-recorded oral poster presentations in guided online poster sessions. Anyway, the organisers will ensure that TT20 attendees will have the possibility to interact with the presenters and chair-persons. students, scientists, extension workers, decision makers, politicians and practical farmers, interested and engaged in agricultural research and rural development in transition and developing countries are strongly invited to participate and to contribute.

🛰️ 🌽 🗺️ 💻 Mapping Corn Growth from the Sky 🛰️ 🌽 🗺️ 💻
In his JST project, Emerson Javier Martinez Garcia focuses on characterizing maize growth phases in Guatemala using UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and satellite imagery, as well as machine learning analysis methods. This collaboration between Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT aims at identifying key growth stages, crop health, and agronomic information to optimize yield predictions.
“Small and medium-sized corn farmers often lack the resources for automated crop monitoring and analysis. Through my collaboration with the CGIAR organization, I aim to develop tools that integrate technology into agricultural activities, streamlining tasks and enabling the collection of valuable data for future analysis and projects,” says Emerson. His research not only supports sustainable farming practices but also empowers farmers with tools for better decision-making.

🧂 🍠 📊 Characterizing salinity hormesis of sweetpotato biomass 🧂 🍠 📊

In her JST project, Malena Apaza Sucapuca focused on investigating the phenomenon of hormesis in two salinity-tolerant sweetpotato varieties at the University of Hohenheim. The two sweet potato varieties were previously tested in a field experiment conducted by the International Potato Center in Mozambique. The objective was to demonstrate the efficient uptake and retention of potassium in plant tissues of sweetpotato under two distinct salinity treatments.

“One of my biggest personal challenges in this project was obtaining healthy and uniform cuttings for planting under the same conditions for both varieties. This required careful selection, preparation, and maintenance of the cuttings, which was both time-consuming and demanding.”, says Malena.
