Sculpture Network is Europe’s platform for contemporary sculpture, a non-profit organisation for the support, encouragement and promotion of contemporary sculpture. Complying with our motto “stand up for sculpture!” we back interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange of ideas among artists, cultural institutions and friends of the arts throughout Europe. The idea of a network for artist, art media

tors and friends of the arts, stemmed from the sculptor Hartmut Stielow, who had experienced the effectiveness and value of such an association, while being a Board member of the International Sculpture Centre in the US. Considerations for establishing an organisation in Europe were deliberated from 2002 to 2004. It was the addition of Ralf Kirberg, a fervent art patron and other curatorial and legal contributions that finally got the project off the ground in January 2004. In the ensuing years "Programs and Services" were established as the back-bone of Sculpture Network's activities. In this time, we have achieved milestones which include: Our fifth anniversary at the bbk studios in Berlin and our tenth International Forum at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In between, we have held events at numerous venues, where renowned experts and artists have shared their knowledge with our audience. We have visited a myriad of sculpture places, creating awareness and appreciation for this art and the endeavour to create it. Since 2004, connections, friends and contacts have been made. Thanks to those connections, cross border and local projects have been realized and bridges built across disciplines. Contemporary Sculpture in Europe is connected.

Pushing Against the Frame with Gevorg Tadevosyan

Watch "Stubbornness" (2024) by artist Gevorg Tadevosyan — a bronze figure caught mid-struggle inside a rigid iron frame, arms braced against the bars, one leg pushing back as if testing the limits of its confinement.

The contrast is the point: fluid, muscular bronze against a cold geometric cage. Structure versus resistance. Restriction versus the drive to break free. Tadevosyan, born in Armenia and trained at the Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts, works in burnished bronze and iron, blending allegory and realism to bring static form to life. As he puts it: "My top priority is to create a conversation between the lines and forms that captivates and interests the viewer."
"Stubbornness" has real physical presence — the tension between figure and frame is something you feel as much as see.

We are happy that Dorothea Magonet is now part of Sculpture Network’s community!💕

⭐Dorothea Magonet is a multidisciplinary sculptor working across a wide range of materials and techniques. Her practice often brings together traditional sculptural materials such as wood, stone, plaster and clay with ordinary, discarded or found objects. Through these combinations, she explores the physical qualities of materials as well as ideas, observations and contemporary concerns.

Travel and cultural encounters play an important role in her work. Her engagement with Japan, including a recent residency, inspired projects addressing tourism, cultural perception and spiritual traditions. Assemblages on paper and traditional Japanese scrolls, as well as sculptural installations, reflect on the ways places and cultures are experienced and represented.✨

Another recurring focus is the human body and its role in contemporary society. Her three-dimensional works and installations also engage with architectural, historical and environmental questions. Environmental issues have become particularly significant: earlier installations used discarded plastic bags and water bottles to address consumption, waste and the misuse of natural resources. In Reuse – Recycle – Grids and Shadows, recycled paper packaging was transformed into sculptural forms.🤩

Her current work continues to investigate recycled materials while exploring the mythical figure of the “Hare-woman” and the theme of listening. Alongside sculpture and installation, Magonet also works with woodblock printing, etching and book-cover design. Across these diverse media, her practice is characterised by material experimentation and a sustained curiosity about cultural, social and environmental themes.🫶👏

📆Dorothea's work will be on view at the exhibition Second Shift from 11 September to 02 October at Royal Park Gallery, London.

A Sphere Full of Optimism — with Stiliana Alexieva 🎥

This week we're sharing Bubble of Joy by SN member Stiliana Alexieva Art.
The work belongs to her ongoing series Spheres of Happiness — vibrant, highly polished spheres that bring colour and play into public space. Drawing on childhood objects like beach balls, marbles and playground toys, Alexieva turns familiar memories into monumental civic landmarks. 🪀

Each sphere reflects what surrounds it — sky, architecture, landscape, and the people who pause in front of it. Viewers often find themselves mirrored in the surface, a quiet reminder of presence and shared experience in public space.

👩‍🎨 Stiliana Alexieva is a British-Bulgarian artist whose practice explores colour, optimism, and the relationship between people and the places they inhabit. Her work has been shown at the Royal Academy of Arts on four occasions and is held in collections including the Qatar Royal Family and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. 🇨🇺 Cuba at the Venice Biennale 2026

"Hombres Libres / Free Men" — a pavilion that speaks in silence and steel.

The first pavilion we visited on our way to the Arsenale — just us, no one else around. A quiet start to the day, and it left everyone deeply impressed. Cuba's pavilion presents a body of work by artist Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy that unfolds across both outdoor and indoor spaces — spilling from the entrance through several rooms, each carrying its own weight.
The work pays tribute to the Maroons — those who chose death over enslavement — and to all who risked everything for true, unmediated sovereignty.
Curated by Nelson Ramirez de Arellano Conde, commissioned by Daneisy García Roque — a tightly focused, deeply personal national presentation.
Tucked away at Il Giardino Bianco – Art Space on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, Castello — just off the usual Biennale path, and worth the detour.

Probably one of our favorites from the whole trip!

🔥🌞A warm, summery welcome to our Joke LC Van Beetem Beeldhouwer !

✨️Joke is a Dutch sculptor working primarily in Italian marble. Her geometric, abstract sculptures explore the relationship between form, space and material through clean lines, geometric volumes and shifting perspectives.

Influenced by Constructivism, Minimalism and Concrete Art, van Beetem approaches sculpture as an architectural presence. Her work investigates balance, proportion and structural clarity, creating a dialogue between mass and void, light and shadow. As viewers move around the sculptures, changing light and perspective continuously transform their perception.🤩

Working from drawings and scale models, she carves each sculpture from solid marble blocks with patience, precision and deep respect for the material. By reducing form to its essence, Joke creates timeless works that invite quiet contemplation and reveal the subtle interplay between geometry, material and space.🫶

Joke divides her time between her studios in Den Dolder, the Netherlands, and Pietrasanta, Italy.

✨ : Anne Schrödl and her Material Dialogues

Anne Schrödl’s artistic practice begins with clay, stoneware and porcelain, but extends far beyond ceramics into photography, video and sound. Educated in Fine Arts in the Rhineland, she creates sculptures and installations that investigate materiality, transformation, and the relationship between natural and cultural forms.

🪞 In her latest Untitled Sculpture (2026), Schrödl explores new possibilities of scale through a ceramic assemblage consisting of two independent sculptural forms and a glass plate. Because the size of ceramic sculptures is limited by the dimensions of the kiln, this work marks her first experiment with building a larger sculpture in separate segments, allowing each form to remain autonomous while becoming part of a larger composition.

Her recent Mixed-Media Untitled (2026) combines photographic prints with glazed stoneware objects arranged in front of them. The dialogue between image and sculpture creates layered spatial relationships, inviting viewers to move between representation and physical presence.

🌿 Branches in Earth (2024) reflects on the connection between the inorganic and the organic. Fired terracotta evokes the imprint of a fallen branch, bringing earth into dialogue with wood—two materials deeply rooted in human cultural history. The work captures the trace of a living form while exploring memory, transformation and the enduring relationship between nature and human making.

✨🤩 Spotlight on our Becky Truman

Rebecca is a multidisciplinary artist, sculptor and author whose practice combines sculpture, performance, film, text and textiles. Drawing on her 40-year career in circus, her work explores themes of memory, identity, the body, and the shared experience created between performer and audience.❤️

Through materials such as glass, resin, papier mâché and natural forms, Rebecca transforms personal experiences and stories into powerful visual narratives that connect past and present.

As founder and artistic director of the pioneering all-female circus company Skinning the Cat, Rebecca played a significant role in the development of contemporary circus in the UK. 🫶

🗓Her current exhibition “Rope Women” celebrates the company’s legacy and explores the contribution of women to circus history, on view until 13 December at Western Bank Library- University Sheffield. https://sculpture-network.org/en/event/93068/rope-women

Rebecca is also the author of the memoir “Aerialist” and recipient of a NESTA Fellowship. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and has been exhibited across the UK.

Through her art, Rebecca gives voice to personal journeys, creative resilience and the often-unrecognized stories of women in performance.🔥
