🦄 Unicorns are not built on ideas alone

At the workshop on Competitor Analysis in the Age of AI led by Dr. Haochun Ma from .tech, we explored how AI is changing the way startups approach market analysis, competition and defensibility.

Some of the key ideas discussed:
- Why features alone are no longer enough
- Why competitor analysis should focus on positioning, distribution and workflow depth
- How AI can be used to challenge assumptions and stress-test strategy
- Why good analysis should create sharper questions, not fake certainty

E-Lab startups also worked on competitor analyses for their own startup ideas and got the chance to present their thinking, challenge assumptions and receive direct feedback on strategy and positioning.

Big thanks to Dr. Haochun Ma for the sharp insights, honest discussions and thought-provoking workshop 🙌

24 hours. ~100 builders. Countless ideas turned into reality. 🚀

Last week, together with Project A, Yellow, and Lovable, we hosted an intense hackathon at the TUM.ai Homebase in Munich: bringing together ambitious founders, developers, designers, and AI enthusiasts to build fast and think big.

From AI tools for VCs to completely open MVPs, teams spent an entire day (and night) turning ideas into working products, validating concepts, and pitching in front of experienced founders and investors.

One thing became very clear:
Munich’s builder scene is thriving. 🧠⚡

The combination of exceptional technical talent and today’s AI-powered building tools means that small teams can now go from idea to MVP in less than 24 hours and the projects we saw proved exactly that.

Huge congratulations to all participating teams and especially to our winners 🏆

A big thank you to everyone who joined, built, mentored, and supported the event, especially to Omar Hedeya (Project A), Victor Navarro Garcia (Yellow), Constantin (Tino) Weberpals and Sophia Nabil Gustafsson (Lovable) for making this possible. 🙌

This was only the beginning. 👀

🚀 From First Pitch to Real Investor Conversations

We hosted a hands-on Pitch Training Workshop with Omar Hedeya (VC at Project A) for our TUM.ai E-Lab 5.0 founders 💡

Instead of theory, Omar shared what fundraising actually looks like in practice:
🎯 how to approach VCs strategically
⚡ what really matters (and what doesn’t) in investor conversations
📊 common mistakes founders should avoid
📈 how things play out in real-life fundraising

To wrap it up, founders pitched their ideas and received direct, no-BS feedback: exactly what you need to sharpen your story and delivery.

🎤 Coming up: Midterm Pitch

After weeks of building, our most promising startups are getting ready to take the stage and present their progress in front of a top-tier jury.

If you want to see the next generation of startups in action, don’t miss it 👇

TUM.ai goes Rio 🇧🇷 – ICLR 2026
From presenting at the AI4Mat workshop to discussing our work directly at the poster with researchers in materials science and machine learning, ICLR was a unique opportunity to test ideas, get challenged, and exchange perspectives across disciplines at International Conference on Learning Representations 2026.

Our work benchmarks augmentation strategies to improve LLM performance in scientific domains.

We evaluated approaches for solid-state synthesis prediction such as retrieval, tools and multi-agent workflows. Our work shows that grounding models with domain knowledge (e.g., via retrieval) matters more than adding orchestration complexity for predicting organic materials synthesis.

We’re really excited about where AI for Science is heading and are grateful we got to contribute to materials discovery through this workshop.

Welcoming the new TUM.ai E-Lab 5.0 batch ✨

Congratulations to everyone who made it in! This was our most competitive selection yet, with 530+ applications. 🚀

This weekend marked the official start of the journey. From day one, participants jumped straight into action: meeting their peers, exploring ideas, and building the foundation for what’s ahead.

A highlight of the onboarding was our mini hackathon, designed for co-founder matching and early idea validation. Teams didn’t just build, they pitched their ideas directly in front of Alberto Giovannetti Utrera from Senovo and received immediate, hands-on feedback.

We were also excited to have the co-founder of Invertix from our last batch join us to share his experience and answer questions firsthand.

Over the next weeks, they can look forward to intensive workshops, mentorship, and a highly driven community: all focused on turning ideas into real ventures.

Excited to see what this batch will build. 💡
