🇬🇧 Christmas 2016, to be precise on December 23rd, we and Oscar, 3 years old at this point, received the diagnosis Neuroblastom stage 4 with metastasis at the lower leg, thigh, the hipp, the spine, the should, the skull, and the bone marrow.
We obviously had no idea what that means and what would be infront of us, but a playing and romping around hasn´t been possible since month - far to strong the pain in the legs and shoulder. Oscar simply couldn't move without painkillers.
As of then, everything happened quickly: on 23rd December we left the hospital to celebrate christmas at home just to return to the clinic on December 27th for Oscar to receive his Hickman catheter. On December 30th Oscar already got his first first dosage of the first block chemotherapie. At this stage 6 blocks chemotherapie each 1 week, 1 tumor surgery, 1 high dosage chemotherapie and a stem cell transplantation were scheduled and planned.
After the 4th block of chemotherapie a 6 hours surgery was performed in which the tumorand surrounding healthy tissue, in Oscar case his adrenal gland, were completely removed. Two more blocks of chemotherapy followed just to prepare us for the next highlight - a stem cell transplantation.
After wiping out the entire bone marrow through the high dosage chemotherapy the previously harvested and processed stem cells were returned. Afterwards we had to wait for several weeks in complete isolation, in which we couldn't even sleep next to Oscar during the night, for the immune system to get itself back in place.
After all that was successfully done Oscar was considered NED, No Evidence of Disease, in september 2017.
The joy and happiness was unbelievable and after the Hickman catheter was removed in a little surgery, soon Oscar was off to a somehow regular life including Kindergarten. We obviously had to go to the clinic weekly for check ups, but the day Oscar returned to the kindergarten for the first time after 10 month was party.
But the party dient last long - in February 2018 the monster was back. During a routine check up a new tumor, this time at a right ripp was discovered. The shock was gigantic as we still rembered the words of our doctor from stem cell transplantation: “…your real worries just start in case the Tumor comes back.”
What followed was another 4 hour surgery including a stay at the ICU. Afterwards 30 rounds of local radiation, a MIBGs ftherapy in which you get radioactively conterminited over the period of on week in complete Isolation to destroy tumor cells from the inside, severel rounds of chemotherapi, severla rounds of immunotherpy, several rounds of a mixed tretend of Chemotherapie and uimmuntheroy combined as well as the current traget therpy, in Weih you take pills to block certain enzymes.
All that plus Hunderts of blood tests, permanent nausea, seizures, hair loss, digestions problems, loss of appetite, etc. Oscar had to endure over the last 3 years and still is full of happiness, energy, positivity, strengest and love. he is an example for kids and adults in how to handle and deal a disease like that.
But the fight is not over yet, since Oscar is considered no evidence of disease yet again. There are still metastases in Oscars body and we have to do everything to fight and eliminate them. And thats where your help is needed:
There are new forms of therapies which enable your own Immunsystem to detect and destroy Tumor cells,. Eventhough Oscar did such a therapy already, there are new forms which are very promissing. but there is one catch: they have been developed at Sloan Memorial in New York and are still on the stage of a study and not an approved medication yet. In Europe they are only available in Barcelona and Kopenhagen.
Although the study has been performed since many years and saved the life of many kids, the costs for it are not paid by the German health insurance. The first quotation of the hospital in Barcelona has a value of app. €200.000 or $250.000. That is almost as much as the currently available treatments in germany cost, but the difference is as mentioned, the the new and in Germany not available treatments are on a level of study and therefore have to be paid by the patients and can not be paid by the german insurances.
And exactly for that we need your support and donation, because otherwise we can not start this potentially live saving treatment for our son Oscar due to missing financial funds.
