This project, conducted by Dr. Demet İslambay-Yapalı & Dr. Hacı Çevik, approaches peace not merely as a political process but as a world of meaning produced by people in their everyday lives. As the first study to focus on Central Anatolian Kurdish communities from this perspective, it seeks both to address a significant gap in the literature on the psychology of peace and to make visible an often-overlooked actor in peacebuilding.

This research, conducted by Özgür Ünal, focuses on the forms of acknowledgment and redress sought by people who attended YİBOs (Regional Boarding Primary Schools) in Kurdish-majority provinces in relation to the human rights violations they experienced, practices of assimilation and violence, the loss of language and identity, and the lasting effects of these experiences. In this context, Canada’s Residential School system, established for Indigenous children, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process undertaken to confront this legacy will be examined as a comparative reference point.

The research by Ruken Ay Adın & Dr. Nisan Alıcı examines the peace process in Turkey that began on October 1, 2024, and took concrete form with the PKK’s disarmament ceremony on July 11, 2025, focusing specifically on the disarmament dimension of the DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration) framework. Its outputs will include a comprehensive research report, a policy paper, a digital comparative DDR guide, and an episode to be published on the DEMOStanSesler podcast channel.

Dr. Ercan Şen’s research examines how the current peace process and the possibility of PKK disarmament are being interpreted and understood by Kurds living in Turkey. The project’s original contribution lies in examining the peace process not through the perspectives of political elites, state actors, or experts, but through the experiences, narratives, and emotional orientations of ordinary Kurds. In this respect, the study seeks to address an important empirical gap concerning the relationship between peace, uncertainty, identity, democracy, coexistence, and collective imaginations of the future in Turkey.
