Die Open Source Ecology (OSE) Germany ist eine Bewegung, die eine Open Source Ökonomie aufbaut, eine Ökonomie, welche sowohl Produktion als auch Verteilung optimiert, und dabei Regeneration der Umwelt und soziale Gerechtigkeit fördert. Wir entwickeln die Technologien zum Aufbau einer lokalen Ökonomie, von Traktoren über Windturbinen bis hin zu Autos, verbessern diese kontinuierlich nach nachhaltig

en Grundwerten wie Reproduzierbarkeit, Modularität, Eignung für den Eigenbau und ökologisches Design, und stellen die Ergebnisse jedem als Open Source zur Verfügung.

Digitalisierung und Nachhaltigkeit stärker zusammenzudenken ist die Mission von Bits & Bäume. Beim diesjährigen Bits & Bäume Summit 2026 am 6. Juni 2026 traf sich das Trägernetzwerk mit seiner Community, um sich über Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre und kommende Herausforderungen auszutauschen. Ich habe als Vertreterin von OSEG teilgenommen und war beeindruckt von einem breiten Angebot an Vorträgen, Workshops und Diskussionen und vor allem von vielen Gesprächen.

Hier ein paar Eindrücke:

Einen Überblick über das, was seit der ersten Bits & Bäume 2018 passiert ist, gab Friederike Rohde vom Fachgebiet Technik- und Umweltsoziologie an der BTU Cottbuss-Senftenberg in ihrer Keynote. Sie stellte auch zentrale derzeitige Diskurse vor: Der Umfang der geplanten Infrastruktur braucht enorme Ressourcen, womit Digitalisierung zu einer globalen Gerechtigkeitsfrage wird: Wer profitiert und wer zahlt den Preis?

As someone new to OSH, I felt that spending two days at the Open Hardware Summit attuned my vision to a world of possibility I hadn't noticed before. Products are no longer singular objects, but clusters of parts that can be reused, repaired, or modified. Suddenly, daily items are no longer opaque systems that I don't have a say in: my broken vacuum cleaner is far from being trash, my shoes are inspiration for my own footwear experiments, backyard lamps can be tinkered into protest lasers with a bit of patience, and even challenges in my community look more like invitations for collaborative innovation.

Open Footwear - To make is also to repair

I was interested in the Open Footwear workshop because it was so accessible: we all know and use shoes, what changes when they're open source? One thing that stood out was Juraj's story about running in his shoes for race after race until the soles wore out.

This year, the OSHWA Open Hardware Summit came to Germany. It was hosted by TU Berlin. This provided an opportunity for many OSEG members to attend.

A total of four talks were organised by and featuring members of the association.

Together with Victoria Wenzelmann and Susan Long, Timm presented the Maker Emergency Kits: an ecosystem for the rapid, community-led production of essential tools in times of crisis.

Sara introduces the HILO Spinning Machine and the broader concept behind open-source yarn production and research.

Holger and his team-mates Thomas Weiß and János Adelsberger presented the Caznic, a state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner that is modular and hackable.

This is a guest post from Fairdevices. At Fairdevices, ‘fairness’ primarily refers to honesty towards the customer through open-source schematics, whereas other projects, such as the (https://blog.opensourceecology.de/de/2025/09/maker-faire-reunion-long-live-the-fair-mouse/), tend to associate fairness more with good production conditions than with open source. This difference stems from the different communities, but is also due to the varying stages of development. Whilst the Fair Mouse is already in production, Fairdevices is still at a stage of development where production does not yet play a major role. These differences provide a good opportunity for both projects to learn from one another.

But now, let’s make way for Fairdevices.

In a world where electronic products are thrown away rather than repaired because of minor faults, the Fairdevices initiative takes a different approach: durable, repairable household appliances based on open-source hardware.
