Diplomacy is both an art and a craft.

IMA attended yesterday’s DGAP - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik e.V. discussion with Ambassador Rolf Nikel on the role of diplomacy in times of upheaval.

A special highlight: we received a signed copy of *Der schmale Grat* for IMA.

Thank you to Rolf Nikel and DGAP for an inspiring evening.

Are we watching the liberal international order unravel — or transform?

That was the central question at a discussion the International Media Academy IMA attended yesterday at DGAP - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik e.V. in Berlin.

The event was built around the new book “Deep Contestations of the Liberal International Order” by Antje Wiener, Thomas Risse, and others, and what made it especially interesting was not just the expert input but the conversations that followed.

Speaking with participants afterward, it became clear how differently people see the current moment — as a breakdown, a transition, or even a necessary phase of change.

In times shaped by Russia’s war against Ukraine, the war in Gaza, and rising geopolitical tensions, these discussions feel very real and far from abstract.

One idea that stayed with me: questioning and contestation don’t automatically mean collapse. In liberal systems, they can also be part of renewal — even if it feels uncomfortable.

Thanks to Antje Wiener, Thomas Risse, and Rachel Tausendfreund for the discussion.

Media can divide. Or it can build understanding.
We choose the latter.

At International Media Academy (IMA), we work with journalists in environments where independent reporting is not always easy — but always essential.

Through hands-on training, mentorship, and long-term collaboration, we support journalists from the first idea to publication and beyond. Our focus is practical, context-driven, and built around real challenges people face in their work.

Over the years, we have partnered with ministries, foundations, and media organizations worldwide — building networks, strengthening skills, and supporting independent journalism where it matters most.

Behind every project are real people, real stories, and real impact.
