As part of our Erasmus+ project Cultural and Historical Awareness for Active Citizenship (CHAC), we’ve developed a comprehensive toolkit and guide for educators — a resource designed to inspire new ways of teaching through public history, oral history, and social storytelling.

The toolkit brings together research, best practices, and training methods from our work in Austria, Germany, and Italy, helping educators and cultural practitioners engage young people in exploring the histories and identities of their communities.

From interview techniques to storytelling exercises and exhibition planning tools — the CHAC Guide equips educators to turn local memories into creative learning experiences that foster active citizenship and social inclusion.

Access our oral archive:
As part of our Erasmus+ project Cultural and Historical Awareness for Active Citizenship (CHAC), we explored local histories and collective memories in Vienna, Berlin, and Nuoro through workshops on public and oral history. Together with young participants and community members, we gathered stories, interviews, and reflections that capture the cultural fabric of these places. The result is a shared oral archive preserving the voices and experiences of local citizens across Europe.

Last month, end of July, NGO NEST Berlin hosted the Final Evaluation Meeting of the project “Cultural and Historical Awareness for Active Citizenship’’ [CHAC] - a KA2 Youth project funded by the Erasmus Plus programme. The meeting brought project partners Xsentrik Arts EduLab and NGO NEST Berlin together to discuss work packages, implementation of multiplier events, dissemination, and the final report.

Partners discussed their achievements so far at the local and international level. Their efforts culminated in three exhibitions on historical and cultural matters in a community context involving youth from Italy, Austria and Germany.

CHAC aims to engage young people in society by raising awareness about the cultural traditions of different regions, through public and Oral History. To support people between the ages of 18 and 30 at risk of social exclusion, CHAC has taken steps to deepen youth involvement in cultural activities and historical understanding.

The exhibition in Nuoro was implemented during the first two weeks of April. ✅

Our curators and participants have been busy, researching the history of Vienna's Sandleitenhof as part of the CHAC - Culture and Historical Awareness for active Citizenship project.

We're now ready to share the stories, images and impressions gathered. The exhibition will be made available to the public for two days. But make sure to stop by for the opening, and catch the opening performance on April 1, 2025, at 18:30!

What an exctiting and rewarding month it was for in Vienna for the CHAC - Culture and Historical Awareness for active Citizenship project! Our partner Xsentrik Arts launched the workshop and research phase - 10 days of research and exploration culminated in an exhibition of the initial research results!
Following workshops on oral history methodologies, our participants explored the Sandleitenhof in Vienna's Ottakring District, where they engaged with citizens, gathered stories and perspectives from the "other" angle, and created works and documentations they felt explored the unique and rich historical tapestry of this Viennese Neighbourhood.

The work in progress exhibit was promising, and as our participants continue to explore and create, we're looking forward to putting on the curated exhibition in March 2025.
Many thanks to SOHO STUDIOS for opening their doors and assisting us in contacting the community and gathering their stories.
