Launched at re:publica 2013, the Global Innovation Gathering has become an central part of the re:publica programme, showcasing tech innovation and maker projects from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The GIG participants have formed a strong community that exchanges information and expertise on innovation and maker issues throughout the year.

GIG presents the citizen science initiative ”Circular Material Valuer Curriculum – Participatory Knowledge for the Circular Economy”.

It is an open investigation about concrete practices of material assessment for circular systems, with a particular focus on the enabling conditions for an increased reuse of materials.

The mAkE Impact Stories report captures how the mAkE project has empowered makers, startups, policymakers, and organizations across Africa and Europe. By fostering collaboration between Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) and makerspaces, the project created a platform for innovation, skill development, and sustainable growth.

🎉 2024 has been such an eventful year for GIG, and we’re ending it on a high note with some good news to share:

🌅 New Horizons
Back in January 2024, we wrote a Horizon proposal that was successful!
We are now hugely looking forward to starting this new project, make-a-thek, together with Fashion Revolution, the IAAC > Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, and Public Libraries2030 – just to name a few of the fantastic partners in this consortium.

🛠️ Empowering Makerspaces
We are celebrating the successful wrap-up of our Horizon project, MAkE - African European Maker Innovation Ecosystem.
So many amazing open resources have been created, and makerspaces have been connected for distributed manufacturing – you can find them all on the makeafricaeu.org website!

Hosting the gathering for African Makerspaces alongside this year’s AfriLabs Gathering in Cape Town was the perfect way to close the project. 🌍

🚀 Event Highlights
FIRST Global in Athens, Greece: Seeing members participate with their teams was inspiring – kids from all over the world collaborating with robots, making new friends, and solving engineering problems! 🤖

Attending the Vulca - European Program Gathering and supporting the Berliner Entwicklungspolitischer Ratschlag e.V. Global Day were also highlights in our calendar. 🤝

And, of course, our GIGweek annual gathering held in Berlin alongside re:publica this year was a standout moment! 🎨
