The fifth and last week will focus on adding a roof to protect the building from weather. At this point, the walls should be sufficiently dry and we no longer need the sun's help for drying. We will have a celebration and invite visitors and hopefully expand the circle of Natural Building Enthusiasts.

If you want to learn how to build a sustainable home from scratch with natural materials in a sustainable way, with inspiring people from around the world, this is for you.

We usually have groups of 7-15 students, sometimes each from a different country, so it will definitely be a multicultural experience. Joining us will be friends and family and the workshop setting is focused on learning and sharing. We will have campfires, drum circles, sharing circles, and the option to join a spiritual, shaman-led ceremony on the land. This workshop is not just about growing a building, but also yourself, facing inner struggles and all that while being supported by a group of inspiring people around you.

Ultimately, we want to finish the project to tackle all tasks in a build from start to finish, so it's up to your ambition what we can cover during the course. Natural Rock Masonry, Round Pole Timber Framing, Cob and Strawbale walls, Earthen / Clay Floors and Plasters, as well as Tiling the Roof are just the basics. Around that we have room for sculpting, niches, arches, and other creative solutions. The learning opportunities are plentiful for those that are joining with a curious mindset.

The third week will focus on filling last week's frame with straw bales. We will prepare all edges and transitions of materials with proper sealing so the bales are protected from weather, insects and rodents.

The second week will focus on creating the frame for the building. We will use round poles for the frame, which are locally sourced, have the smallest possible carbon footprint, are sturdier than squared industrial timber, and a lot nicer to look at.

The first week will focus on creating a stable base for the rest of the building. We will dig down to create a gravel trench foundation, add a natural rock stem wall and finish with an earthen floor base layer.

This is a good time for some insight into the details of the bathroom. When you've been doing this for a month in a row already, it's easy to fall into a "cob trance" and miss the details that need to go in from hip height, such as built-in shelves, niches, power plugs, pipe cleanout boxes ... and not to forget more bottle patterns. The pipes that go into the floor need to be protected to be up to code ... unfortunately in more plastic. Not to forget ... like the window frames ... basically anything that will later touch cob, needs to be covered in clay slip and if possible nails for a good physical connection.

Halfway through, we spent this morning in awe, with the sun highlighting a masterpiece of a symmetric pattern, made over 2 weeks with a material that's quite difficult to get straight. But once more we proved, with cob you can do almost anything.

At this point our team peaked at about 15½ people, three dogs, and two cats, it really takes a village to build a family home out of cob.

The next step after the bottle pattern was setting the window frames. Teamwork is everything here, one to level the frame, one to fix it, and most importantly, one to keep an eye on safety.

It's difficult to see in the picture, but those frames are covered in clay slip to allow for better adhesion and 4-inch nails for a solid physical connection to the cob wall that will hold them in place. Due to the nails, the frames are sitting on the wall rock-solid. When adding cob around it, there will be a considerable force working on the frame, so the top needs to be fixed either by braces or like here to a closeby post to prevent it from moving. This is also beneficial during the cob drying and shrinking period.
