Spotlight on Afghanistan 🇦🇫

In August 2018, Hanifa Yousoufi made history by becoming the first Afghan woman to summit Mount Noshaq, Afghanistan's highest peak at 7,492 meters. Her achievement is a testament to Afghan women's resilience and determination. Photo by Sandro Gromen-Heyes

Afghanistan is a country of rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes. With over 43 million people, it is home to diverse ethnic groups such as Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks.
Situated at the crossroads of Asia, Afghanistan features majestic mountains like the Hindu Kush and vibrant traditions such as the Attan dance, symbolizing unity and pride. Its flavorful cuisine, including Kabuli Pulao, highlights its cultural richness.

However, the country faces significant challenges. Under Taliban rule, Afghan women endure severe restrictions on education, employment, and freedom of movement. Widespread displacement, coupled with economic instability and humanitarian crises, leaves much of the population without access to basic needs.

Thank you to everyone who presented their countries, attended our events, and supported our initiative. We wish you a wonderful end to 2024 and can’t wait to see you at our first event of 2025 in January!

A warm thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the culture of Afghanistan and the resilience of Afghan women. Hosted by inspiring Afghan women, the event brought together history, culture, and meaningful conversations about the challenges and strength of women in Afghanistan.

From engaging presentations to the lively Attan dance, delicious Afghan food and green tea, and fun activities like the quiz, the evening provided a space for cultural expression and meaningful exchange. For many Afghan women in Cyprus, this event marked the first time they came together to present and celebrate their culture with others.

We’re deeply grateful to YALLA Collective Space & Café, Generation for Change CY, Mission Solidarity, and all the participants who made this gathering so special. A special thanks to the European Solidarity Corps for funding this event.

Our next event will take place in January 2025. Stay tuned to see who will share their stories and culture with us next 🌍

Spotlight on the Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩

The DRC is a country of incredible diversity, resilience, and natural beauty. With over 95 million people from 200+ ethnic groups, it’s Africa’s fourth most populous nation. Rich in rainforests and mountains, the DRC’s landscapes are home to unique biodiversity but face environmental threats from deforestation and mining.

Historically, the DRC endured a brutal colonial period under Belgium’s King Leopold II from 1885 to 1908, leaving a legacy that still impacts its social and political landscape. Yet today, the vibrant fashion and cultural expressions of the Congolese people continue to showcase their enduring spirit and resilience.

Despite its beauty, the DRC faces significant challenges, including political instability, economic inequality, and a serious humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and facing limited access to essential necessities.

Thank you for joining us in exploring the DRC's rich culture and challenges. Stay tuned as we continue our journey of discovery with more country presentations to come.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who joined us and our supporting organizations, Generation for Change CY, Bridge of Hope, and Mission Solidarity, for their exceptional support. Thank you for helping us make this event a success! A big thank you to the European Solidarity Corps for funding this event.

Stay tuned for more upcoming events, where we’ll continue exploring the rich cultures of the various communities living in Cyprus.

Our next event will take place on Friday the 15th of November.
Can you guess which country we will present next? 🇦🇫
