Soulla, 24, was born and raised in Cyprus to parents who fled Guinea and Sierra Leone in search of safety. Today, as she completes a master's degree in Political Science, Conflict Resolution and Diplomacy, she is already thinking about how to help build a more inclusive future for the island she calls home.

UNHCR Cyprus, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA/KOP), and the Asylum Service of Cyprus jointly organised a football training session at Sotirio Stadium in Kofinou for refugee children and unaccompanied minors living in reception facilities across Cyprus. Over 50 children took part, coached by CFA Experts in a safe, welcoming, and joyful environment.

This is what integration looks like in practice.

As Leslie Velez, UNHCR Representative in Cyprus, put it: "Sport has the power to open doors, creating space for respect, friendship and a sense of belonging — all foundational elements to true integration."

This is just the beginning. The children will return to the pitch for a football tournament on World Refugee Day in June 2026 — marking 75 years of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

A huge thank you to the Cyprus Football Association and the Asylum Service of Cyprus for making this happen. 🙏
