PASSION, PROCESS, PERFORMANCE
MASTERCLASS WITH BARRY PURVES

How does an idea become an image?
How does movement become performance?
And how can every artistic choice serve the story?
Internationally acclaimed animator and director Barry Purves comes to Nicosia for a special masterclass on stop-motion animation and scenography.
At the heart of the masterclass is his celebrated short film Achilles (1995), inspired by Homer’s Iliad.
Through storyboards, behind-the-scenes material and examples from his films, Barry will explore how character, movement, rhythm, design and performance come together to create meaning — and how creative ambition can flourish even within limited time and budget.
Drawing on his experience as a director and designer of theatre and opera, he will also explore the connections between animation and live performance, from space and lighting to movement, rhythm and acting.
Every element of an artistic composition can — and must — contribute to the story.
A unique opportunity to meet one of contemporary stop-motion animation’s most distinctive artists and gain insight into his creative process.
Presented in the context of ETERNAL STORIES, a hybrid animation and theatre performance by Fantastico Theatro.
