Visual Anthropology Center /VAC/ That's why we organize workshops of visual anthropology and residency programs.

We want to contribute to the global consciousness of humanity by creating socially engaged ethnographic films, photographs, and other forms of audio-visual art. Visual Anthropology Center - VAC
In our age ever so overwhelming with visual data we find it crucially important for documentarists and social scientists to cooperate with visual artists, film and theater-makers in order for their work to

be not only relevant but visually enticing as well. Documents can be art as pieces of art can be documents – yet visual anthropology in the digital age is one of the most underdeveloped social sciences and there’s barely any institutions or organizations that give it the key importance it should have. The BVAC is a creative hub and a database that aims to fill the aforementioned gap. Last years successful School of Visual Anthropology which was held in Belgrade, Serbia made us realize that we can and have to expand: the fact that there is no institution for VA on the Balkans may not be so surprising as the whole region has yet to develop such societies but Europe and the Globe don’t stand much better either. The hub that we imagined is unique: motion picture and photography, any kind of visual art shouldn’t just be a tool in the hand of the scientist; visual anthropology and film are to have a symbiotic relationship, documentaries and feature film can have an anthropologic approach and anthropology and social science in general can have an artistic approach – it is our belief that the much desired social change depends on such approach. We believe that the development of a global consciousness of humanity can only develop if there are international organizations that set the enforcing of such consciousness as their goal. The BVAC intends to be the first step on a long road that leads to a global network of similar hubs aiming to be a powerhouse of socially sensitive artistic and scientific work.

Filmovi:

Radnička 5
Pavle Bajić i Marina Umihanić

Autori: Nikola Koruga i Bojana Milosavljević.

Autori: Ivan Milutinović i Anđela Nikolić

Visual Anthropology Center is calling anthropologists, filmmakers and all socially engaged scientists and artists to join us for School of Visual Anthropology FIVE: FIRE!

Last year's School of Visual Anthropology produced 4 ethnographic films investigating the notion of work in post-industrial landscape. The terrain was so inspiring for everyone that it made us return to Požarevac, paying respect to its heritage of FIRE.

School of Visual Anthropology is an intensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary, hands-on ethnographic film workshop which will lead you through all stages of ethnographic film-production: from developing the idea and the methodological frame, to fieldwork and engaging the protagonists, to video post-production. The workshop ends with a screening and a panel discussion with the professors about the films and the experience of SVA5.

Visual Anthropology Center proudly announces the 5th edition of School of Visual Anthropology - SVA FIVE: FIRE.

Join us for a hands-on interdisciplinary workshop of engaged ethnographic filmmaking!
In this intensive workshop you will go through all stages of the process: from developing the idea and the methodological frame, to fieldwork and engaging the protagonists, to video post-production. The workshop ends with a screening and a panel discussion with the professors about the films and the experience of SVA5.

As a part of our initiative of creating engaged ethnographic films with local communities, and receiving great feedback from last year's participants, this year's workshop will take place in Belgrade & Požarevac.

Drawing inspiration from the name of “Požarevac” - in Serbian “požar” means “fire” or “conflagration” - this year's theme is FIRE.

As a basic element of transformation and community, Fire draws our attention to our relationship with the land and each other, to the original human experiences that are shared amongst individuals and communities all around the world. Fire should help us explore the familiar in the foreign, and the unfamiliar in the banal.

📍 Location: Belgrade & Požarevac, Serbia
📅 Dates: August 30 – September 8, 2026

Price: 1250€ (all materials & technology, accommodation, transfer from Belgrade-Požarevac & one warm meal per day included)
