We reforest tropical habitat! The Three-wattled Bellbird is one of many species in jeopardy due to of the loss of habitat on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

We are reversing that trend by protecting habitat and reforesting abandoned pastures. Since 2001, the FCC or Costa Rican Conservation Foundation, has led the reforestation effort of tropical forests in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The FCC has protected over 84 hectares of habitat and provided more than 123,000 trees (all native species) for reforestation of tropical forest. All of this work is possible through donations and grants.

Change the World Kids is a student led organization dedicated to helping communities and taking action to fight climate change. Based in Vermont, they journey to Costa Rica yearly to aid the FCC in our reforestation efforts.

Since 2003 Change the World Kids have been partnering with the FCC to plant trees in critical areas. This year alone they planted close to 2300 trees in the Monteverde area!

Change the World Kids es una organización dirigida por estudiantes, dedicada a ayudar a las comunidades y a tomar acción para combatir el cambio climático. Con sede en Vermont, viajan a Costa Rica cada año para apoyar a la FCC en sus esfuerzos de reforestación.

Desde 2003, Change the World Kids se ha asociado con la FCC para sembrar árboles en zonas críticas. ¡Solo este año sembraron cerca de 2300 árboles en la zona de Monteverde!🌿☀️

🌿 Meet the three-wattled bellbird! 🐦 This unique bird calls the mountains of Costa Rica home during breeding season, but you can also find it across western Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama throughout the year.
What makes the male so special? His call! It’s loud, bell-like, and super distinctive — chances are you’ll hear him before you ever spot him, since these birds are pretty shy and secretive.
Sadly, this fascinating species is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, so raising awareness is more important than ever. 💚 Let’s help protect their habitats and keep their calls ringing through the forests! 🌎✨

We have had a record tree pick up year! In just one month we have handed out over 67 species of trees to local homes, businesses, and farms. Many of these species are endangered or key actors in the local ecosystems! 🌿🦥

Monteverde’s unique elevation and microclimates make it a crucial site for studying ecological resilience and the effects of climate change on tropical forests. With its steep elevation gradients, unique cloud forest ecosystems, and high levels of biodiversity, Monteverde is exceptionally sensitive to shifts in temperature, rainfall patterns, and cloud cover. Even small climate changes can lead to major disruptions in species distributions, water cycles, and ecosystem health.

Our restoration efforts are designed with this sensitivity in mind. By increasing native forest cover, we help stabilize local microclimates, protect watersheds, and create habitat corridors that allow species to move and adapt as conditions change. Reforesting with a diversity of native species not only boosts resilience but also enhances long-term carbon storage—one of nature’s best tools for mitigating climate change.

La elevación y los microclimas de Monteverde lo convierten en un sitio crucial para estudiar la resiliencia ecológica y los efectos del cambio climático en los bosques tropicales. Con sus marcados gradientes de elevación, ecosistemas de bosque nuboso únicos y altos niveles de biodiversidad, Monteverde es especialmente sensible a los cambios en la temperatura, los patrones de lluvia y la cobertura de nubes. Incluso pequeñas alteraciones climáticas pueden provocar grandes impactos en la distribución de especies, los ciclos del agua y la salud de los ecosistemas.

Nuestros esfuerzos de restauración están diseñados teniendo en cuenta esta sensibilidad. The Ocotea Monteverdensis and its small green fruit are one of the most iconic tree species of the cloud forest of Monteverde. We work year round to collect and germinate their seeds in order to provide saplings to reforest for the rainy season. As an endangered species it is important they are supported and reintroduced into the local forests🍃

La Ocotea Monteverdensis y su pequeño fruto verde son una de las especies arbóreas más emblemáticas del bosque nuboso de Monteverde. Trabajamos todo el año para recolectar y germinar sus semillas y así proporcionar árboles jóvenes para la reforestación durante la temporada de lluvias. Al ser una especie en peligro de extinción, es importante apoyarla y reintroducirla en los bosques locales.

To assist landowners, we study efficient restoration techniques and combinations of species to assist with water and wind protection, nitrogen fixation, carbon sequestration, and other ecosystem services.

We work to ensure that restoration is not only ecologically sound but also practical and scalable for local landowners. Through field trials and partnerships, we evaluate which species combinations and planting techniques perform best under different conditions, especially those unique to Monteverde’s varied topography and climate. Para apoyar a los propietarios de tierras, estudiamos técnicas de restauración eficientes y combinaciones de especies que ayuden con la protección contra el viento y el agua, la fijación de nitrógeno, la captura de carbono y otros servicios ecosistémicos.
