A sad update from a rescue in Playa Hermosa this week.
On Thursday, this young female howler from troop 2 fell from the trees near the second entrance of Playa Hermosa. When she woke, her family was gone and she was understandably frightened and disoriented.
One of our wonderful volunteers Jim rescued her and spent the morning keeping her calm and comfortable. She was offered mango for some hydration, but didn’t want to eat and instead rested peacefully in his arms for several hours.
At first we hoped she had simply been knocked unconscious by the fall and would recover. Sadly, as the day progressed, her condition deteriorated. She began having severe spasms and was taken to Dr. Jesica, where Dr. Nicolás treated her.
It became clear that she had suffered brain damage from the fall, and by Friday morning the difficult decision was made that euthanasia was the kindest option.
These animals are so much like us… She was frightened, separated from her family and hurt, and in those final hours all we could do was make sure she felt safe and cared for.
