Saving Howler Monkeys and other Costa Rica Wildlife/ [email protected]

To involve the community of Playa Hermosa in an effort to conserve our present troops of Howler monkeys and expand their habitat through reforestation and education.

2) To identify the monkey corridors past and present.

3) To preserve the current habitat and rebuild deforested areas wherever possible with specific trees necessary to provide food for the Howlers to provide sustainabil

ity. To educate developers and residents alike about the importance of saving as many trees as possible while developing and to add trees in the important corridors to maintain and expand monkey routes.

4) To build crossover bridges in important existing corridors where roads intersect them or where habitat has been destroyed to prevent further electrocution and road deaths.

5) To identify specific food resources required by the Congo.

6) To provide educational awareness for all residents and guests to show the importance of monkey life in Playa Hermosa.

7) To REMEMBER that the Monkeys were here first, to encourage them to continue to expand their families knowing that there is adequate food source and habitat for them, and because of this they will invite new families to join them here in our Village.

I am very happy to say that Roberto has a plan to do extensive work on this well known "Hot Spot"! This location is a daily stop for the monkey troop we have studied for quite a few years. They travel from the top of the mountain at Los Almendros where we have several bridges, pass by Father Rooster Restaurant where we have more bridges, pass the dangerous cables in this video, go into Vista Ocotal and up to Pez Vela and back.

This video was taken just beyond Hacienda Blu Restaurant in Playa Panamá, heading towards Liberia.

One monkey is resting on a steel cable installed by ICE beneath the utility lines. The other uses the busy road, reluctant to cross the cable. Unlike a monkey bridge, the steel cable offers nothing for them to hold onto above, making many monkeys hesitant to use it or, they will reach above to the cables to hold onto, in this setting, with high voltage power lines on both sides of the road, it is an extremely dangerous crossing.

We met with ICE at this location and they were willing to allow a monkey bridge to be installed. However, because there is very limited space between the uninsulated power lines, it became clear that this would not provide a safe crossing for the monkeys.

The safest and most effective solution is to insulate the power lines, and this particular area is part of ICE's territory, not Coopeguanacaste's.

We hope to see this area made safer for the monkeys that rely on this corridor every day.

Not every location can be solved with a monkey bridge. Sometimes the only way to prevent another tragedy is to make existing infrastructure safe for wildlife.

Yesterday we were in Palo Alto with Coopeguanacaste, Palo Alto's cables are uninsulated and above ground. However, the homeownsers have voted for annual assessments, and they have begun the work of putting all cables underground. Thank you Palo Alto. This will take some time, but the community has beautiful trees and delicious greenbelts where the monkeys can safely forage.

A new monkey bridge installed in Nuevo Colón last week.

Unfortunately, our work here isn't finished. Two of the older bridges nearby have deteriorated and now need to be replaced. They have done their job for many years, but time and weather have taken their toll.

This is why we're always fundraising. It's not only about building new bridges. It's also about maintaining and replacing the ones already keeping wildlife safe.

Costa Rica cannot continue promoting itself as a world leader in conservation while monkeys are still dying from preventable causes every week, just like you saw in our previous post.
