Tender Hearts Foundations Responds to Ongoing Demonstrations in Nepal: Founder on the Ground Witnessing Urgent Humanitarian Needs

September 10, 2025

KATHMANDU, NEPAL – The founder and president of PKP Tender Hearts Foundations (“Tender Hearts”), a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Nepalese-American community in the greater D.C. metropolitan area and Nepal, has found herself in the heart of Kathmandu during one of the most deadly protests in Nepal’s history.

Prabha Bhattarai Deuja, the founder of Tender Hearts and a leader in the American-Nepalese community in Centreville and the surrounding areas, has been actively assisting those affected by the response to the demonstrations, providing points of contact for blood donations, support for households facing temporary water shortages due to strained infrastructure, and basic necessities as needed.

In recent weeks, antigovernment demonstrations across Nepal have intensified, with many young protesters - some identifiable by their school uniforms - taking to the streets in protest of widespread government corruption and nepotism, materializing in a pervasive lack of economic opportunities and high levels of wealth disparity. These demonstrations began when a ban on the operation of 26 social media applications - including Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) - was put in place due to their failure to meet regulatory requirements in Nepal.

The unrest has led to fires and confrontations between protestors and Nepal’s security forces at several government buildings, including Nepal’s parliament and Supreme Court, and culminated in the recent resignation of KP Sharma Oli as Nepal’s prime minister. Tragically, security forces’ response to these protests has contributed to a rising death toll, with numerous young people among those killed.

Tender Hearts Foundations remains concerned for the vulnerability of these youth and the broader humanitarian impact of the response to the demonstrations. Bhattarai Deuja, who is from Nepal and has been on the ground witnessing these events firsthand, expresses profound concern for the safety and well-being of those caught in the turmoil.

“To witness a child’s life taken before your eyes - a body once filled with endless promise and now lifeless - is a wound no soul should ever have to endure.”

“Without true leadership, the future of these young people stands at risk. We must hold our leaders accountable. Children learn from what they see, and we cannot allow them to inherit a world of corruption and failure instead of one built on integrity and hope.”

Tender Hearts Foundations remains committed to providing critical support during this crisis. The organization continues to coordinate efforts to deliver essential resources and guidance to those affected by the violent response to the demonstrations in Nepal and within the Nepalese-American community in the greater Washington D.C. area.
