Meet the experts tackling operational challenges in Membrane Technology
How can higher RO recovery be achieved without triggering silica, sulfate or carbonate scaling?
As recovery increases, scale-forming species become more concentrated in the membrane concentrate—raising the risk of precipitation and performance loss.
🔹 Carbonate scaling: pH adjustment can help control CaCO₃, but acid dosing may increase sulfate loading.
🔹 Sulfate scaling: CaSO₄, BaSO₄ and SrSO₄ must be assessed against their solubility limits.
🔹 Silica scaling: often requires closer attention at high recovery, with pH, concentration and metal ions such as Fe and Al influencing deposition risk.
The challenge is balancing recovery with feed chemistry, pretreatment and concentrate conditions.
