Great ideas and international partnerships are essential. But how do we turn them into fundable, implementable projects that deliver tangible impact?

On the third day of the Summit in Istanbul, WAITRO Operations and Seneca Impact Advisors will introduce the concept for the WAITRO Project Development and Advancement Program (PDAP), a new approach to bridging the gap between collaboration and implementation.

The ambition: To help promising project ideas within the WAITRO network move forward by connecting the right expertise, international partners, funding opportunities, and project development support.

Together with Seneca Impact Advisors, we will explore how PDAP could strengthen WAITRO's role in transforming research and innovation partnerships into concrete action including opportunities emerging directly from the Summit's Co-Creation Workshops.

Join Jean-Marc Ch*****ne (Principal and Managing Director of Seneca Impact Advisors) and Dominik Reinertz (Managing Director of WAITRO Operations e.V.) as they introduce the concept and discuss how to build pathways from innovation to impact.

🌱 How can we produce food with fewer resources while building more resilient food systems?

Across the WAITRO Global Innovation Family, researchers are exploring new approaches to how food is produced, preserved and adapted to changing environmental conditions.

This month’s Member Roundup highlights four initiatives that are opening new pathways towards more sustainable and resilient food systems:

🔹 The Danish Technological Institute (DTI) is leading the SUMIT project to develop a circular approach to protein production. By combining microalgae cultivation with CO₂ capture and nutrient recovery from biogas plants, the project aims to produce protein while requiring less agricultural land and water than conventional protein sources.

🔹 Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile highlighted Air Protein at its International Seminar on Food for the Future. The innovative approach uses elemental fermentation, combining microorganisms with elements from air and water and renewable energy to produce protein-rich flour. This could open new pathways for more sustainable food production with significantly lower resource requirements.

🔹 Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI) from Taiwan hosted an APEC workshop bringing together experts from across the Asia-Pacific to advance low-carbon food supply chains. From smart processing and circular by-product use to alternative food ingredients, the workshop highlighted technologies that can reduce emissions and make food production more sustainable.

🔹 Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) is advancing climate-smart rice production under semi-arid conditions. By intercropping rice with legumes, the research explores how farming systems can improve soil fertility and productivity while reducing fertilizer use and strengthening climate resilience.

Together, these initiatives show how research across the WAITRO Global Innovation Family is contributing to more resilient food systems, from production and preservation to climate adaptation.

What if circular economy was not just about reducing waste, but about strengthening climate resilience and resource security?

At the WAITRO Summit 2026, Engineer Omar AlSaleh, Senior Circular Economy & Sustainability Expert at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Jordan, and Founder of the Circular Economy Club (CEC) Jordan, will explore how circular approaches can help address two increasingly interconnected challenges: climate change and resource security.

This WAITRO Member-Led Session on “Circular Economy: The Breakthrough for Climate and Resource Security” will look beyond conventional waste management to explore the Circular Economy as a strategic climate and economic agenda – one that can reduce dependence on virgin resources, strengthen value chains and build resilience to climate and supply-chain disruptions.

Less than four weeks to go – get ready to hear global voices and perspectives in Istanbul. 🌍

One of them is Lupe Leal, Science and Technology Analyst in International Cooperation at CNPq – Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, who will join us as an invited Keynote Speaker at the WAITRO Summit 2026.

Lupe works at the intersection of international cooperation, research funding and partnership building, helping turn international connections into research partnerships, funding mechanisms and joint initiatives. His work connects institutions across Latin America and the Caribbean, BRICS and Portuguese-speaking countries, strengthening global research networks and creating opportunities for scientific collaboration.

In “From Istanbul to the World,” he will bring this perspective to a forward-looking discussion on what comes after the Summit: How can the connections, ideas and collaborations created in Istanbul translate into new partnerships, joint initiatives and international impact?

📢 How can Africa’s research and technology organizations move from strong innovations to implementation at scale?

At the WAITRO Summit 2026, the Africa Roundtable, co-hosted by WAITRO and CSIR South Africa, will provide a strategic platform for implementation focused dialogue and partnership building, mobilizing African RTOs, funders, investors, and global partners to move beyond fragmented collaboration and addressing ex*****on gaps.

Under the theme “From Vision to Implementation – Mobilizing WAITRO African RTOs for STISA-2034 and Agenda 2063 Implementation Support” the session will put the focus firmly on action: showcasing African-led collaborative initiatives, connecting funding-ready innovations with potential partners, and strengthening WAITRO’s mandate to support STISA‑2034 and Agenda 2063 effectively.

At the WAITRO Summit 2026, Santiago Echavarria, Executive Director of Centro de Ciencia y Tecnología de Antioquia - CTA, and Martha Liliana Marin, Innovation and International Cooperation Lead at CTA, will bring a Latin American and Caribbean perspective to the discussion on how RTOs can strengthen this role.

This WAITRO Member-Led Session on “Strengthening RTOs to Dynamize Innovation Ecosystems: From Organizational Practice to Policy Impact” will offer a community space to reflect on the evolving role of RTOs and explore how institutional practices, strategic capacities and stronger policy interfaces can enable RTOs to move from providers of knowledge and technology towards active ecosystem orchestrators.

🌍 What if waste was not the end of the story, but the beginning of something new?

Across the WAITRO Global Innovation Family, researchers are finding new ways to turn waste streams and industrial byproducts into valuable resources.

This Member Roundup highlights four initiatives demonstrating how science and technology can unlock new value from materials that might otherwise go unused:

🔹 Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation - BITRI is rethinking coal ash through its B-CIRC initiative. By exploring how this industrial waste can be transformed into materials for energy storage and clean energy technologies, the project aims to create a circular, locally driven approach to battery and energy innovation in Botswana.

🔹 Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN)) is tackling plastic waste through its PITARA technology. Deployed on Derawan Island, the system uses multistage pyrolysis to convert difficult-to-manage plastic waste into fuel, connecting waste management with local energy solutions.

🔹 AINIA is taking circularity into the food industry through the FERM4FOOD project. The initiative captures CO₂ generated during industrial fermentation and uses precision fermentation to transform it into high-value ingredients such as microbial protein and oils, creating new possibilities for more resource-efficient food production.

🔹 Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA) is giving coffee-processing waste a second life. Researchers are transforming coffee mucilage into an ingredient for functional foods, including probiotic yogurt, while exploring how the approach could create new opportunities for Colombia’s coffee-growing communities and bioeconomy.

From coal ash and plastic waste to CO₂ and coffee byproducts, these initiatives show how research can challenge the idea of waste itself – transforming overlooked resources into new technologies, products and opportunities.

Together, they demonstrate the diverse approaches within WAITRO’s Global Innovation Family towards a more circular and resource-efficient future.

🌿 How can long-term ecological data help turn biodiversity research into better policy and action?

Biodiversity loss is accelerating worldwide. Yet addressing it requires more than generating new data. Connecting long-term observations, emerging technologies, research infrastructures and diverse knowledge systems and making them accessible for those taking action, is needed.

The Scoping Session “BIODIVERSITY 3: Leveraging Long-Term Ecological Data for Evidence-Based Biodiversity Policy and Action” co-hosted by Belmont Forum at the Summit 2026, will bring together perspectives from across the global innovation community to help shape a future multilateral funding opportunity.

Led by the French National Research Agency ANR (Agence nationale de la recherche) and the Environmental Research Programming Agencies (FERPA) this interactive session forms part of the scoping process, where participants will explore how to:

🔹 identify key knowledge gaps and societal needs
🔹 connect existing ecological data, infrastructures and emerging technologies
🔹 contribute perspectives to the co-creation of a transnational funding call
🔹 build new connections for transdisciplinary biodiversity research

The session goes beyond discussing a future funding call: It is an opportunity to bring new organizations and perspectives into the biodiversity conversation – connecting research with technology, innovation, policy and implementation.

Participants are invited to contribute their expertise, identify potential partnerships and help explore how emerging solutions can better support biodiversity policy.
