🌟 Introducing Shakuntala Thilsted, Member of the WAFI Advisory Committee! 🌍

Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted is the Director for CGIAR Impact Area: Nutrition, health & food security and the Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health at WorldFish. She was awarded the 2021 World Food Prize for her groundbreaking research on holistic, nutrition-sensitive aquatic food systems, including aquaculture and capture fisheries.

An influential leader, Shakuntala was instrumental in formulating the WorldFish 2030 research and innovation strategy: Aquatic Foods for Healthy People and Planet. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the UN Committee on World Food Security’s High Level Panel of Experts and was Vice Chair of the UN Food Systems Summit 2021 Action Track on Equitable Livelihoods.

Her expertise in promoting aquatic food systems is vital for nourishing nations and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

🌟 Introducing Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, Speaking Guest for WAFI 2024! 🌏

Professor Sibanda is an accomplished animal scientist and practicing farmer with extensive experience as a policy advisor to numerous African governments and global institutions. She serves on the Nestlé Board, as Chair at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe, and as an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria .

As an Associate Fellow at Chatham House and a member of Champions 12.3, she is dedicated to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving global food waste. Lindiwe has also held significant leadership roles, including Board Chair for the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Vice President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.

She was appointed to the CGIAR System Board in April 2021; she became Chair in January 2023.

We are excited to hear her insights at WAFI 2024!

🌟 Introducing Beth Bechdol, WAFI 2024 Opening Ceremony Speaker! 🌏

Beth Bechdol is the Deputy Director-General at the FAO, where she oversees global initiatives in Emergencies and Resilience, providing critical agricultural assistance during crises and addressing food insecurity. She also manages Resource Mobilization, South-South Cooperation, and leads programs in Plant Production and Protection.

Before joining FAO, Beth was the President and CEO of AgriNovus Indiana, focusing on agbioscience sector development. She has held key roles at Ice Miller LLP, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, and in D.C. as Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

An expert in building alliances, Beth has contributed to various boards, including the National FFA Organization Board of Trustees. Raised on a multi-generational family grain farm in Indiana, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a master’s degree from Purdue University.

🌟 Introducing Ismahane Elouafi, Member of the WAFI Advisory Committee! 🌏

Ismahane Elouafi serves as the Executive Managing Director of CGIAR, bringing a wealth of experience in agricultural science and leadership. Since her appointment in December 2023, she has further established her influence in the field.

Previously, Dr. Elouafi was the Chief Scientist at the FAO of the United Nations and the Director General at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in the UAE. Her impressive background includes roles as Senior Adviser to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada, National Manager of the Plant Research Section, and Director of Research Management of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

A recognized thought leader, she has made significant contributions to international research organizations and strategic panels, including the Global Commission on Adaptation and HarvestPlus. In addition, she serves on the governance boards of influential organizations such as the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI).

Dr. Elouafi was also part of the Scientific Group for the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and served on the CGIAR System Board. Her extensive expertise and vision for sustainable agricultural development will play an invaluable role in shaping WAFI 2024!

🌟 Introducing Shenggen Fan, Vice-Chair of the WAFI Advisory Committee! 🌍

We are honored to introduce Professor Fan, distinguished Chair Professor at the College of Economics and Management at China Agricultural University, and the Director of the CGIAR. With over 20 years of experience at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), where he served as Director General until 2019, Professor Fan has been at the forefront of agricultural policy and research.

His impressive career includes pivotal roles as Division Director and Research Fellow at IFPRI, Research Economist at the University of Arkansas, and Post-doctoral Fellow in the Netherlands. An expert in his field, he actively contributes to critical panels, including The Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition and the Advisory Council of the Oxford Martin School.

A recognized leader and prolific author, Professor Fan excels at building strategic relationships across agriculture, food security, health, and climate change. His insights and vision will be instrumental in driving impactful advancements at WAFI 2024!

🌟Introducing Kenneth M. Quinn, Co-Chair of the WAFI 2024 Advisory Committee! 🌏

Ambassador Quinn is the President Emeritus of the World Food Prize Foundation, where he has played a pivotal role in elevating the foundation since he took the helm in 2000. His leadership transformed the World Food Prize into the premier global recognition for achievements in food and agriculture, inspired by the vision of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug.

With a distinguished 32-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, Ambassador Quinn has served as a Rural Development advisor in the Mekong Delta, on the National Security Council, and at the U.S. mission to the UN in Vienna. His efforts have included leading a successful campaign to restore the historic Des Moines Public Library into the Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates and overseeing the installation of Dr. Borlaug's statue in the U.S. Capitol.
