On 1st Jan 2020, I, Luke Grenfell-Shaw, set off on the journey of a lifetime, cycling over 23,000km from Bristol to Beijing, to encourage CanLivers to be as active as possible and experience the richness of life, and to raise money for cancer charities!

My biggest couple of weeks of training, ever, done ✅

Amazed how well my body has tolerated it and even got stronger as the mileage ramped up.

Excited to be on that CCC start line in just over 2 weeks.

Thanks Lewis Moses for helping me break this new ground, Nathan Bernard for keeping me healthy and Brooks Trail Runners Brooks Running UK & Ireland, as ever for the support to allow me to live this life.

I didn’t expect to spend 50.5 kilometres running alone.

Eiger wasn’t just my best result of the year so far—it felt like my most complete race.

I knew the field would be strong, so I expected a battle from the start. Instead, after the first 500 metres I looked around and realised... I was alone out front.

I didn’t think it would last for long, but I decided to run my own race.

The plan then became simple: don’t panic, trust the training, run hard.

The first climb felt controlled and relaxed, perhaps helped a little by the rain (still a Brit at heart 🇬🇧 ). For the first time in a race I used poles, and they made a huge difference on the long climb to the Faulhorn.

Then came one of the most satisfying parts of the day: the descent. It’s something Lewis and I have been working on a lot—looking ahead, staying relaxed and moving efficiently—and for the first time in a race it felt like it clicked.

There was one unexpected interruption: waiting at a railway crossing for 90 seconds while two trains passed. Not ideal... but to my relief no one appeared behind me.

From there I wanted to go full gas to the finish.

Crossing the line in 4:45:07 and finding out I’d broken Petter Engdahl’s course record by over three minutes wasn’t something I’d expected, but it was incredibly satisfying and reflection that my training is taking me in a good direction.

Days like this are a reminder that improvement often isn’t about one big breakthrough—it’s lots of small pieces gradually coming together.

Thanks as always to Brooks Running UK & Ireland Brooks Trail Runners and Lewis Moses for helping to make it happen.

Onto the next training block as I prepare for CCC!

Winner and course record at EigerUltraTrail 51K!

4:45:07 (-1:30 waiting for trains to cross!), 51km, 3100m

Really stoked with this performance. I’ve been working hard this year to improve my, well, everything and it’s so gratifying to see the results of that start to come through.
Big congrats to Peter Frano and Chris Myers for some strong racing 💪

Full race report to come.

Huge thanks to Lewis Moses for all your support in guiding my training and giving me more tools in the box. So excited for the next stage!

I’ve been training hard but who wants to see that? Here’s a me with my proudest achievement this month (I will teach you Anthony Felber ;) ).

Had some fun doing via ferratta, training with the best crew of Lewis Moses Gemma Hillier-Moses | Athlete | Coach and Joe Farrelly. Thanks for all the advice on descents Lewis and pacing me! Also I’m surprised that my body is still feeling great after some big weeks. Seems like stretching might even help (who’d have thought it Daria Goreva?? I’m almost living like a professional athlete now :p).

Been fuelled by the fantastic Your One Stop Nutrition Shop. - nailing my recovery shakes and gel guzzling, thank you ❤️

Excited to toe the start line of EigerUltraTrail 50K in just over a week. Let’s see what’s in the tank!

I can’t watch my own film on YouTube without seeing ads.

I find this disgusting and insulting (I spent 6 years making this film with Rumsey Films ). More importantly, it means people can’t watch the film without it being broken up by ads for banks and apps.

The only way I can disable this is by reaching 1000 subscribers on my YT account (dangers of control by a tech giant).

If you could subscribe to my channel (follow link to film in bio) I would be so grateful. 790 currently, so only 200 more needed.

Please share and repost if you can - and watch the film, it’s great! 😃 28K views, 1.2k likes, loads of amazing comments.

Thanks everyone and sorry for the winge ❤️

Best post-race recovery? Climb some more mountains!

An amazing few days with TJ Mitchell exploring a bit more of Slovenia in slow time. Blown away by how beautiful this country is. Verdant valleys, craggy escarpments, lakes, forests, mountain huts. It’s got it all.

Even bull’s testicles for dinner (final photo)!

I will be back!
