🌱 Empowering Baka Voices, Growing Their Future

During our recent field mission, the CRA team visited Baka communities south of the Dja Faunal Reserve to learn from their daily activities and see firsthand the efforts they are making to improve their livelihoods.
Many Baka community members are passionate about expanding their cocoa, cassava, and plantain farms, yet they face challenges such as limited access to farming tools, seeds, forest resources, and land. Despite these hurdles, their resilience and determination continue to shine through.

At CRA, we are working hand in hand with the communities to turn these challenges into opportunities, supporting them, and co-developing projects that are sustainable, empowering, and rooted in their culture and knowledge.

Empowering Baka Communities: CRA’s Bottom-Up Approach..

Phase 1 of our mission took us to ten indigenous Baka communities south of the Dja Faunal Reserve. This mission was facilitated by the CRA team, which included dedicated Baka liaisons.
In each village, the team held sensitization meetings and open discussions to learn directly from community members about their daily activities, livelihood strategies, challenges, and aspirations. The team also visited livelihood sites, including farms, nurseries, and other community initiatives, to better understand local practices and priorities.

CRA is working hand in hand with the communities to co-develop projects that are sustainable, culturally aligned, and empowering. This is just the beginning of a journey where indigenous voices lead the way!

🌳Tree of the Week: Moabi (Baillonella toxisperma) 🌳
The Moabi is more than just a tree, it is life, culture, and survival for many communities in Cameroon, especially the Indigenous Baka people.
Why it matters:
• Its fruits and oil are vital forest foods, rich in nutrients.
• Traditional medicine from its bark and roots supports community health.
• Its wood is highly valued but overexploited, putting the species at risk.
• The Baka people identified Moabi as one of the most important species to domesticate and restore for their future.

🌱 CRA’s role:
At Conservation Roots Alliance (CRA), we are working with Indigenous communities to establish Moabi nurseries and restore this species in their forests. By doing so, we protect biodiversity, sustain culture, and ensure livelihoods for generations to come.

At CRA, our mission is clear:
