Cameroon can be cleaner — and young people are making it happen.

The Green Stewards Network is building teams across Cameroon to:
✅ Clean streets
✅ Improve school environments
✅ Educate communities on responsible waste practices

This is more than volunteering.
It’s a movement for people who take action.

Waste management remains a challenge in our Cameroon communities.

Limited infrastructure, low awareness, and rapid urbanization continue to strain waste management systems in Cameroon.

Sustainable solutions require partnerships between communities, NGOs, and local authorities.

Floods do not start with rain. They start with plastic in drains, waste on streets, and everyday habits we excuse.

The tragedies happening in Bamenda recently and across Cameroon is a warning. Environmental neglect becomes human tragedy.

Clean communities are not built by government alone. They are built when ordinary people decide that waste management is their responsibility.

That is why we're building two practical communities at GSH.

Happy New Year once more Green Stewards.

2026 for us is a year of action, ownership, and community powered transformation.

We will focus on shifting mindsets, especially how communities perceive and manage waste. Rather than treating it as something to discard and forget, we will position waste as a shared responsibility that can be transformed into value through education, reuse, and collective action.

At Green Stewardship Hub, this direction guides everything we are building in 2026:
- Waste reduction learning in schools,
- Community clean-up initiatives that restore shared spaces,
- Above all a digital technology that allows reusable items to move from one household to another instead of ending up in drains or dumpsites.

To sustain this work, we are intentionally growing two action-driven communities that will define our impact in 2026.
• **Green Stewards Network** : A volunteer powered community mobilising for waste reduction campaigns, school sensitisation, and community clean-ups
• **Reuse for Impact Community** : A network of individuals and organisations committed to donating reusable items and supporting circular solutions.

These communities are the backbone of what we intend to achieve this year and they are open to everyone who believes that cleaner, healthier communities are built through participation.

If you have ever wanted to be part of change that is visible, practical, and community led, this is your moment.

2026 is here. And we are just getting started.

Is this an initiative we can emulate?
What capabilities and capacities do we need?

Reusing waste to create value is what can sustain our environment long-term.

In the Netherlands, sustainability is literally sprouting from discarded egg cartons. Dutch innovators have launched vertical mushroom farms made entirely from recycled egg cartons — transforming waste into fertile ground for food. These lightweight, biodegradable cartons serve as moisture-retaining substrates that allow mushrooms to grow in compact, urban environments.
The concept emerged as part of the Netherlands’ circular economy initiative, which aims to eliminate waste by reusing everyday materials. The cartons are sterilized, filled with nutrient-rich compost, and stacked vertically in controlled indoor farms. Within weeks, oyster and shiitake mushrooms begin to bloom, fed by recycled water and organic byproducts from other industries.
Each 1,000-square-foot setup can produce hundreds of kilograms of mushrooms monthly, supplying local restaurants and grocery stores with fresh produce while reducing landfill waste. The process requires 90% less land and water than traditional farming and releases almost no carbon emissions.
Beyond food production, these carton farms are teaching models for sustainability — showing how cities can grow food locally, cleanly, and intelligently. The Netherlands continues to lead the world in agricultural innovation, proving that even trash can feed the future.

🚨 Yaoundé Is Overflowing With Waste : It’s Time to Act!

Over the past weeks, piles of uncollected waste have taken over our streets, blocking circulation, creating health risks, and exposing the urgent reality of poor waste management in our cities.

Cameroon generates millions of tonnes of waste each year, and much of it ends up exactly where we’re seeing it now; on our roads, in drainage systems, and in open spaces. While government action is needed, we as residents can take practical steps NOW to reduce the pressure.

At SEPAH, we are calling on every resident to take simple steps that make a real difference:
♻️ Sort your waste — separate plastics, organics, and recyclables. Sorting helps reduce what ends up on the streets by up to 40–60%
🚯 Avoid dumping on streets and in drains — it worsens flooding and health risks.
🔄 Choose reusable items to cut down daily waste.
🤝 Join community clean-ups and support local waste initiatives.
✍ A coordinated effort to report blocked areas helps authorities prioritize pickups.

A cleaner Yaoundé starts with each of us.
Let’s take responsibility, take action, and protect our environment, our city depends on it.
SEPAH – Advocating for a cleaner, safer, sustainable Cameroon.
