*BIRTH CELEBRATION:* OWID CELEBRATES THE BLESSING OF NEW LIFE THROUGH OKU CULTURAL TRADITIONS

The Oku Women in Development (OWID) yesterday celebrated the birth of two children in a colourful ceremony that beautifully showcased the richness of Oku culture, traditions, and community values.

The celebration was marked by cultural dances, joy, and the symbolic handing over of the two babies to their godparents, in keeping with a cherished tradition that emphasises collective responsibility for a child’s upbringing and well-being.

In Oku tradition, the role of godparents goes beyond witnessing the birth of a child. It represents a meaningful commitment to accompany the child through life’s journey, providing guidance, care, encouragement, and support as the child grows into adulthood.

Through this celebration, OWID reaffirmed the importance of preserving cultural heritage, strengthening community bonds, and nurturing a spirit of solidarity in which every child is welcomed, cherished, and supported.

Beyond the dancing and festivities, the ceremony served as a powerful reminder that raising a child is not the responsibility of parents alone, but a shared commitment of the wider community.

OWID congratulates the families on the arrival of their precious little ones and wishes the children good health, wisdom, protection, and a bright future.

Celebrating the People Behind the Success of the OWID Empowerment Project

Behind every successful project are dedicated people who work quietly, consistently and passionately to make a difference.

The success of the Oku Women in Development (OWID) vocational training and empowerment programme for internally displaced young girls would not have been possible without the commitment, coordination and tireless efforts of the Project Committee members and the various focal points.

From identifying and following up the beneficiaries, coordinating with the different training centres, monitoring their progress and facilitating communication among stakeholders, the Committee members and focal points have played a crucial role in ensuring that the project remains on track and delivers meaningful results.

Their dedication has contributed to the empowerment of 23 internally displaced young girls from Oku Sub-Division, who are currently acquiring practical skills in tailoring and fashion designing, decoration, hotel management and restauration, hairdressing and esthétique, among other fields.

The recent presentation of sewing machines and pressing irons to nine trainees is one of the tangible fruits of their hard work and commitment.

Your work may often happen behind the scenes, but its impact is being seen in the lives and futures of the young women being empowered.

Celebrating the Pillars Behind the Transformation ❤️

At Oku Women in Development (OWID), our patrons are more than supporters—they are partners in transformation.

Their commitment, generosity and continued encouragement are helping OWID provide vulnerable and internally displaced young women with skills, equipment and opportunities to build self-reliant futures.

At the recent handover ceremony in Nkolbissong, Yaoundé, our patrons joined OWID members and trainees as nine young women received sewing machines and pressing irons to support their vocational training and future income-generating activities.

Your presence and support remind our young women that they are not alone and that their dreams matter.

Nine internally displaced young women from Oku Sub-Division, residing in Yaoundé, have received sewing machines from Oku Women in Development (OWID) to support their vocational training and future income-generating activities. Six of the beneficiaries, who are undergoing a two-year training programme in tailoring and fashion designing, have completed the first half of their training and are expected to graduate next year, while the three others, who are training in decoration, are completing their programme this year.

The nine beneficiaries comprise six trainees in tailoring and fashion designing and three in decoration. As part of OWID’s efforts to support their economic empowerment, each of the nine trainees received a sewing machine and a pressing iron to support their practical training and future transition into income-generating activities.

The official handing-over ceremony took place in Nkolbissong, Yaoundé, in the presence of OWID members and patrons, who are among the backbone supporters of the Association.

The event also brought together internally displaced young girl trainees from the various fields of training offered under the programme, including hotel management and restauration services, hairdressing and esthétique, among others. Trainees from the different fields had the opportunity to present their internship reports before their sponsors and OWID patrons, sharing their experiences and the skills acquired so far.

The gathering also provided an opportunity for OWID members, patrons and trainees to interact in a convivial atmosphere, with participants sharing a common meal and refreshments.

Altogether, 23 internally displaced young girls from Oku Sub-Division are currently undergoing vocational training in various Women’s Empowerment Centres in Yaoundé, notably Yaoundé I, II, III, VI and VII, under the partnership between OWID and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family. The initiative seeks to equip the beneficiaries with practical skills that can enhance their self-reliance, economic empowerment and livelihoods.

Oku Women in Development (OWID)‘s ongoing empowerment efforts aligns with His Royal Majesty Fon Ngum IV’s vision to mentor Oku youths.

Under the project "Developing vocational skills for Internally Displaced Young Women and Girls from Oku Sub Division", we are pleased to report that since October 2025, OWID has been actively training 24 Internally Displaced Young Ladies from Oku Sub Division currently residing in Yaoundé.

This project focuses on essential life skills development and taking place in Women and Family Empowerment Centers of Yaoundé I, II, III, VI and VII.

Yaounde is the pilot phase of the project which will continue in the North West, West and Littoral Regions.
