Empowering Young Minds: How Books and Extra Curricular Competitions are Helping Crisis Affected Kids Thrive
In crisis hit communities, primary school kids often bear the brunt of disrupted education. But in Nkong Fondom of Lebialem Division, South West Cameroon, a unique initiative Nkong Fondom Pupils Spelling Championship is helping these young learners bounce back and shine.
This initiative kicked off in November 2025 by providing 200 books to 100 pupils in four primary schools of Nkong Fondom and reading exercises tailored to their needs, helping kids rebuild their love for learning. "It gave me happy and great," says 10 year old Favor, the overall best pupil of the competition, who has not experienced any extra curricular school activities throughout his life because he lives in a crisis environment with his family.
To reinforce learning, the program provided books to be read for three months, organized spelling and dictation competitions. On 06-07 February 2026, Kids showcased their skills at school and inter-school finals stages, winning didactic materials prizes like school supplies and books with general schools prizes awarded to the schools. "I was so proud when I won!" Raissa 11 year best female pupil at the competition.
This goes a long way to;
- Improved literacy rates
- Boosted confidence and resilience.
- A renewed sense of hope for the future.
The program's success shows that with the right support, crisis affected kids can thrive. As one teacher noted, "These kids have faced so much, but they're still eager to learn."
Congratulations to the youngest ROBOGA team members Morfow Dianne & Fonkem Clovis Tanyi for perfectly executing the project from A-Z. Clovis u did a great video and we trust u will do better next time .
