WWF Cameroon

WWF Cameroon Cameroon is a country of some 475,000 square kilometres inhabited by about 20 million people (CIA World Facts records 2013).

It is home to a rich ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural diversity, and one of the primary hosts to the Congo Basin which holds over 15% of the world’s remaining tropical forests, and which is one of the 35 priority places through which WWF is delivering its Global Initiative. A huge population of elephants and great apes, which are WWF’s global priority species, are documented in Cameroon. Ca

meroon therefore contributes in critical ways to the global priorities of the Congo Basin forests and flagship species. Our objective is to see the exceptional landscapes of Cameroon managed sustainably so that biodiversity is conserved, ecosystems functions and services are maintained, valorised and contribute to reducing climate change, while improving peoples’ livelihoods and contributing to sustainable development. WWF is present in Cameroon since 1990, thus 27 years of functioning. It has had several geographic and thematic scope of work. Cameroon is a part of the Congo Basin, a WWF global priority place within its Global Programme Framework (GPF), for which conservation is mostly delivered. Thus the Cameroon Programme builds on and contributes to WWF’s Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) Vision, goals and existing works within the country captured in the 2035 (GESP) vision and the region (Commission des Forets d’Afrique Centrale/Central Africa Forest Commission - COMIFAC)) vision in order to have more lasting impact on the rich biodiversity that it harbours for the good of mankind. The Cameroon Country Programme Office works under the Cameroon government national conservation framework outlined in the Forest Environment Sectoral Programme (FESP) and its Growth and Employment Strategic Paper (GESP), which spells out important biodiversity hotspots with high conservation values and the development vision for the country by 2035 respectively.

As BIODEV2030 moves towards its closing phase, the project team, alongside MINEPDED, engaged directly with communities in Mintom to share a documentary co-created with them on ongoing human practices that negatively impact the forest and biodiversity.

Across communities in the South Region (Assok, Odoumou, Mbon Ayok, Bité, Mintom, and Nkè), one message stood out: communities are not only aware; they are willing to act.
From strengthening sustainable agriculture (cocoa, plantain, groundnuts) to developing non-timber forest products such as djansang and bitter kola (Garcinia kola), local populations expressed their commitment to improving livelihoods while preserving their environment.
At the same time, they raised concerns about forest exploitation and the need for stronger protection and enforcement of the law.

Through BIODEV2030, WWF continues to support inclusive, community-driven solutions for sustainable development, because lasting impact starts on the ground, with people.
