The calm reflected on the faces, the smiles, and the attention given to every word spoke of much more than a simple awareness-raising session. They reflected the importance of creating spaces where Indigenous women and girls can learn, exchange, and openly discuss issues affecting their health and well-being.
On the occasion of the 32nd Anniversary of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, celebrated on 9 August 2026, AIWO-CAN organized a sensitization session at its offices at Hydra Building, Etoudi, Yaoundé, for Mbororo Indigenous women and girls, under the theme: “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.”
The session was facilitated by Mrs. JIDJOU Marie Madeleine Epse Wachou, Nurse at the Medical and Social Centre of the University of Ngaoundéré, and Ms. BOUBA Bame Hapsatou, Medical Doctoral Student at the Institute of Medical Technology. The presentations focused on sexual and reproductive health, the importance of antenatal care, disease prevention, as well as mental health and postpartum stress management.
Because safeguarding life also means informing, listening and supporting.
