At Youth and Contemporary Development (YCD), we believe forests are at the heart of thriving communities. They provide livelihoods, support local economies, and sustain the well-being of people and the planet.

This year’s theme, “Forests and Economies,” highlights an important truth: when forests are protected and sustainably managed, communities grow stronger and more resilient. For many young people and rural communities, forests are not just natural resources—they are sources of income, opportunity, and hope.

🌱 As young change makers, we have a role to play in protecting our forests and promoting sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment.

👉 Let’s take action together—plant trees, raise awareness, and support community-led solutions that protect our forests for future generations.

As a child grows, the pencil's gentle grasp gives way to the pen's decisive stroke. ✏️➡️🖊️ The pencil offers erasers—flexibility, do-overs, the grace of childhood. The pen offers permanence. A silent truth that our choices become indelible marks.

This transition mirrors our relationship with the planet.
🌍 For decades, we treated Earth like a pencil sketch—believing we could erase pollution, undo extinction, and redraw forests. But we are now writing in ink.

🖋️ Climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic-filled oceans are the permanent marks of unsustainable choices. Unlike a notebook, we cannot tear out this page and start over.
Let's be more intentional with the story we are writing on this planet.

🌱 Choose sustainability. Make your mark a masterpiece, not a mistake.

💬 What kind of mark do you want to leave? Let us know in the comments.

🌱 Empowering Green Champions, One School at a Time

Over the past weeks, YCD carried out a sustainability outreach programme with students at Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Obala and at GreenSprings Digital University, engaging young people through practical environmental education and hands-on agricultural activities.

At GBHS Obala, over 60 students took part in interactive sessions using the PLAN (Play, Learn & Act Now) card game, a plastic waste management workshop where they repurposed bottles and tyres, and a practical training on fruit tree grafting (avocados). These activities helped students better understand environmental challenges in their communities and how they can be part of the solution.

At the university, students visited the farm site and participated in hands-on sustainability activities, learning directly about sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship.

These engagements are part of YCD’s ongoing efforts to empower young people with practical skills, environmental awareness, and leadership opportunities. We believe that when youth are equipped with knowledge and hands-on experience, they become powerful actors of change in their communities.

We’re grateful to all students, facilitators, and partners who made these activities meaningful. This is how we build the next generation of Green Champions. 💚

Reimagining Agriculture Through Youth Innovation

Across Cameroon, smallholder farmers face daily challenges such as unpredictable weather, plant diseases, post-harvest losses, and limited access to reliable information. But what if data and technology could change that?

Thanks to YCD's Farmer Guide App, a youth-led, mobile-first innovation designed to transform how farmers grow, sell, and adapt. Built by passionate young Cameroonians, this app turns smartphones into powerful agricultural tools.

What makes it special?

Instantly spots crop diseases using your phone camera.
Hyper-Local Weather Alerts
24/7 guidance on sustainable farming in local languages.
Connects farmers directly to buyers and storage.
Fosters peer learning and climate-smart solutions.

Designed for basic smartphones and offline use, it ensures no farmer is left behind even in remote areas.

But beyond the tech, it’s about young Africans using innovation to tackle food insecurity and climate change head‑on, creating jobs and hope in the process.

🌍✨ Celebrating International Education Day at GBHS Obala!✨🌍

On January 24th, Youths and Contemporary Development (YCD) proudly joined in the celebration of International Education Day under the theme "The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education." This theme emphasizes the crucial role young people play in shaping education systems and highlights their involvement in decision-making processes to create inclusive and future-ready learning environments. 💪🎓

We had an incredible day with over 60 students at Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) , who are our passionate Green Champions! 🌱💚

The day began with an engaging session using the (Play, Learn, and Act Now) cards, where students explored pressing environmental issues and learned how they can contribute to sustainable practices. 🃏🌎 This interactive approach empowered them to take an active role in their education and community!

Next, we rolled into a creative workshop on plastic waste management, turning plastic tyres and bottles into urban gardening tools and decorative items. 🌿♻️ It was inspiring to see these young leaders innovate solutions to tackle plastic pollution!

We concluded with a training on fruit tree grafting, specifically focusing on avocados. 🌳 This hands-on experience reinforced the importance of tree planting in promoting sustainability and food security, key areas where youth can make a lasting impact.

We are also thrilled that captured our efforts for a special documentary. 🎥✨

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible! Together, we are empowering the next generation of Green Champions to reshape education and make a positive impact on our planet. 🌱💪

YCD is proud to continue its collaboration with Oceanix Recovery, strengthening our shared commitment to green energy, sustainable agriculture, and youth development.

Together, we’re contributing to the creation of a Farmers’ Guide App a digital field companion designed to support producers from the very first stage of production.

The app will help farmers minimize losses, improve quality, and adopt climate‑smart practices for a more resilient agricultural future.

From crop planning and soil preparation to pest management, post‑harvest handling, and quality control, the app offers practical, step‑by‑step guidance and real-time support.

By helping users identify challenges early and take informed action, it aims to stabilize incomes, reduce waste, and make sustainable farming more attractive for young people.

At YCD, we believe technology and youth innovation go hand in hand in driving a sustainable future for agriculture and we’re proud to be part of this transformative journey.

Youth Innovation in Action.

Youths & Contemporary Development (YCD) was proudly represented at the Global Health System Solutions Youth Innovation Challenge 2025 in Bafoussam, West Region. Out of more than 200 applicants, we were shortlisted among the top 40 projects for the pitching phase in the West Region.

On 19–20 November, our team had the exciting opportunity to exhibit our innovative solution designed to reimagine rural education and improve learning outcomes for underserved communities. These two days were highly inspiring and strengthened our commitment to building inclusive and equitable access to education through our solar bag initiative.

This was also a great opportunity for the team led by Fodieng Emmanuel Patrick, our Regional Coordinator for the West Region, to showcase YCD’s work, connect with other young innovators, and learn from experts in health, technology, and social impact.

This milestone marks an important step in our vision for Cameroonian youth empowerment, sustainable development, and meaningful contributions to clean energy and education for all.

Thank you to Global Health System Solutions and all partners for creating this platform for youth-led innovation.
