Protecting the World's Most Trafficked Mammal.
21 February 2026 - World Pangolin Day falls on the third Saturday of February each year. Observed annually by conservationists, researchers, and wildlife advocates worldwide, the day raises awareness about pangolins and the urgent threats they face.
The official theme for 2026, is "Pangolin Guardians in Action". This theme honors the conservationists, researchers, and community members working on the frontlines to protect these unique creatures through rescue, rehabilitation, and anti-poaching efforts.
Some key Facts About Pangolins;
Most Trafficked: Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked non-human mammals on Earth, primarily hunted for their meat (a delicacy in some cultures) and scales.
Species and Status: There are eight recognized species—four in Africa and four in Asia. All eight species are listed as threatened, ranging from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered, on the IUCN Red List.
Natural Pest Control: A single pangolin can consume up to 70 million ants and termites annually, playing a vital role in balancing forest and farm ecosystems.
Unique Defense: When threatened, they roll into a tight, near-impenetrable ball, which protects them from natural predators like lions but unfortunately makes them easy targets for human poachers.
