SOPISDEW began operations in Oku in the North West Region of Cameroon in 2010 with a team of 5 Volunteers. Our original emphasis was on volunteering for Community Education Development. Since 2012 we diversified into a wide range of programs including: Education, Capacity Building and Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Livelihood, Health and Wellness, Democracy and Peace building, Media and Information, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Protection and Social Welfare

🌱 From Campus to Community: Learning by Doing

As part of our summer internship and community experience realized in partnership with the TAGDev 2.0 UBa Programme of The University of Bamenda, students visited our demonstration site on urban agriculture, exploring how limited spaces can be transformed into productive and sustainable food systems.

Our focus is horticultural agroforestry—integrating trees, vegetables and other food crops using environmentally sustainable methods adapted to urban and peri-urban settings. 🌿🥬

This field experience goes beyond the classroom. It gives university students practical skills, exposes them to real production challenges, and helps them discover opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship and green livelihoods in horticulture.

Through the TAGDev approach, we are helping transform university students into practical problem-solvers, innovators and future job creators, equipped with skills that respond to the realities of their communities.

Conservation is strongest when communities lead the way.

Over the past few weeks, SOPISDEW Cameroon has been proud to support the launch of the Lake Oku Clawed Frog Conservation Project by leading stakeholder engagement, community mobilization, and coordination with local institutions and traditional authorities.

Working alongside Grassroot Initiative for Sustainable Development, the Palace of Fon of Oku, the Ijim–Oku Plantlife Sanctuary Management, community conservation teams, and local leaders, we are helping build the partnerships needed to protect Lake Oku's unique biodiversity while supporting the livelihoods of the people who depend on this landscape.

Our role goes beyond conservation activities. We are creating spaces for dialogue, strengthening community participation, supporting restoration efforts through tree planting, and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities that make conservation a shared responsibility.

The critically endangered Lake Oku Clawed Frog (Xenopus longipes) is found nowhere else in the world. Protecting this unique species also means protecting the forests, water resources, and communities that make the Lake Oku ecosystem thrive.

We appreciate Grassroot Initiative for Sustainable Development for leading this important initiative with support from the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. We also thank the Fon of Oku, traditional authorities, community leaders, and the people of Oku for their trust, collaboration, and commitment to safeguarding this natural heritage.

This marks the beginning of a shared journey. Together, we are building a future where biodiversity conservation and community development go hand in hand.

What if every child grew up understanding that disability is part of human diversity and not a reason for exclusion?

Following the knowledge and skills gained through our recent Disability-Inclusive Humanitarian Action training facilitated by the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities Cameroon, SOPISDEW was honored to share these lessons with children at The Forest Learning Academy.

Children are tomorrow's leaders, teachers, employers, and decision-makers. By introducing disability awareness at an early age, we help shape attitudes rooted in empathy, respect, and inclusion before stereotypes take hold.

Through engaging discussions and interactive activities, the children learned that every person deserves to participate, belong, and thrive, regardless of ability. Their enthusiasm and willingness to embrace these values reminded us that building inclusive communities begins long before adulthood.

We are grateful to The Forest Children of Africa for creating this opportunity and to Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities Cameroon for equipping our team with the knowledge that continues to reach and inspire others.

Together, we are nurturing a generation that sees ability before disability and inclusion before difference.

Learning happens best in the field.

As part of SOPISDEW Cameroon Internship Programme, our current interns from the The University of Bamenda recently participated in an outstation learning visit designed to deepen their understanding of community development and sustainable agriculture.

Working alongside local farmers, the interns observed poultry brooding practices, crop production, and day-to-day farm management. The experience gave them practical understanding into how agricultural activities are carried out and the realities farmers face.

The interns also conducted a community needs assessment, engaging directly with farmers and community members to identify local priorities, challenges, and opportunities. They visited MISSPA Orphanage to better understand the needs affecting children's welfare and the role development organizations can play in supporting vulnerable communities.

The information gathered through the needs assessment will help SOPISDEW Cameroon identify priority gaps, design appropriate interventions, and mobilize resources and partnerships to respond to the needs identified within the community.

This hands-on learning experience strengthened the interns' skills in community engagement, observation, data collection, and participatory needs assessment while exposing them to the realities of rural development.

At SOPISDEW Cameroon, we believe that meaningful learning begins with listening to communities, understanding their realities, and working together to create lasting solutions.

Strengthening Capacity for Disability-Inclusive Humanitarian Action

What does it take to ensure no one is left behind during a humanitarian response?

It starts with people who understand inclusion, recognize barriers, and have the skills to remove them.

Over two days, SOPISDEW staff, volunteers, interns and partners participated in an intensive training on Disability Inclusion in Humanitarian Action facilitated by the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities Cameroon under the Phase 4 Leave No One Behind project.

The sessions explored disability concepts and models, the rights of persons with disabilities, the IASC Guidelines on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action, inclusive coordination, needs assessment using the Washington Group Questions, and practical ways to adapt organizational tools and programmes to be more inclusive.

The training went beyond lessons. Participants worked together to review SOPISDEW's approaches, identify gaps, and develop practical actions that will strengthen disability inclusion across our programmes and humanitarian interventions.

As communities continue to face multiple humanitarian challenges, inclusive action is not optional. It is essential to ensure that every person, regardless of ability, can access assistance, participate in decisions, and exercise their rights with dignity.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities Cameroon for facilitating this impactful learning experience. We also appreciate our valued partners, CAASDEV-CAmeroon and Wheat Development Cooperative Society for joining us throughout the training and reaffirming the importance of collective action in advancing disability inclusion. At SOPISDEW, our commitment is clear: to make disability inclusion a daily practice, not an occasional activity, and to ensure that every programme we implement creates space for everyone to participate, contribute, and thrive.

SOPISDEW was pleased to host an orientation session for 10 interns from the The University of Bamenda who will begin their internship with us this July.

The session introduced the interns to our mission, core programs, and the work we do with communities across Cameroon. Discussions focused on our impact in education, health, sustainable livelihoods, entrepreneurship, democracy and peace, media, and social protection.

We are excited to support these young professionals as they prepare to gain practical experience, develop new skills, and contribute to community development during their internship.

📚🌱 Education is one of the most powerful tools for building a sustainable future.

SOPISDEW is proud to serve as a local implementation partner in the asa-programm initiative, “Strengthening Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through Networking, Capacity Building, and School-Based Projects in Cameroon.”

Implemented by Engagement Global on behalf of the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), this initiative will help strengthen sustainability education in schools by empowering communities, building meaningful partnerships, and supporting long-term, school-led action.

Through this project, SOPISDEW will focus on:

Our Team had the privilege of participating in the public lecture delivered by Prof. Patrick Okori, Executive Secretary of RUFORUM Network alongside stakeholders and TAGDev 2.0 UBa implementation partners at The University of Bamenda. We also had a working session as key implementation partners on how to scale and sustain our actions as we transform our work to create more sustainable jobs.

As a TAGDev 2.0 implementation partner, SOPISDEW operates an Innovation Hub that empowers young people through green enterprise incubation and job integration. We support students, graduates, and out-of-school youth by helping them develop sustainable businesses, build practical skills, and connect with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. We also help youths connect research with real world problems that can create opportunities for young people.

Beyond programme implementation, TAGDev 2.0 is also strengthening SOPISDEW's institutional capacity in governance, financial management, safeguarding, gender inclusion, communications, and branding—laying a strong foundation for greater impact, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

We believe that investing in youth innovation, green entrepreneurship, and strong institutional partnerships is key to creating decent jobs, protecting the environment, and building resilient communities.

Together, we are building the next generation of green innovators and entrepreneurs while strengthening the institutions that support them.
