🌿 Promoting Sustainability and Food Security in Oku’s Mountain Communities 🌿
Led by Tata Charity Yenlan (Team Leader, Mount Oku Center & Mountain Sentinels Fellow) and supported by the Mountain Sentinels Fellowship, the Mount Oku Center for Gender and Socioeconomic Empowerment, in partnership with SOPISDEW Cameroon recently carried out a free training workshop on orchard development and food security. This program focused on empowering women-led farmer groups and community leaders to adopt sustainable practices in Oku’s mountain communities.
The first phase took place at Elak Community Hall, where participants gained practical skills in organic food cultivation, preservation, and processing. They also learned about basic food security, sustainable farming methods, and waste management to improve environmental health.
In the second phase, held at the Mount Oku Demonstration Center, participants engaged in hands-on activities such as planting fruit trees (plum, apple, pear, and more) and developing tree nurseries. The workshop also included a Training of Trainers (ToT) to equip participants to share their knowledge within their communities.
The program ended with a special tree planting ceremony at a degraded village shrine. Women from the Center planted indigenous Prunus africana trees, with full support from traditional authorities—an inspiring act of cultural restoration and environmental care!
This initiative promotes local sustainability by building climate-resilient food systems, empowering women in agroecology, restoring degraded land while preserving Oku traditions, and encouraging eco-friendly community practices.
We are proud of every woman, leader, and youth championing this positive change in Oku. Together, we grow stronger! 🌱
