Guardians of the Green Heart: How OFYI Youth Are Spearheading Forest Preservation in Cameroon
The One Forest Youth Initiative (OFYI) in Cameroon is proving that the protection of the world’s critical ecosystems is no longer just a job for older generations of scientists and policymakers. Born in the wake of the One Forest Summit, this dynamic movement has mobilized the youth of the Congo Basin—the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest—to become proactive agents of change.

Their engagement is multifaceted, moving far beyond passive participation in climate dialogues to implement tangible, on-the-ground solutions.

1. Moving from Words to Action on the Ground For OFYI members, engagement means getting their hands dirty. They understand that while international agreements are necessary, the real battle is fought at the local level. They organize and lead intelligent reforestation campaigns, focusing not just on planting numbers, but on restoring ecological balance using indigenous tree species that benefit both biodiversity and local communities.

2. Education as a Conservation Tool Recognizing that long-term preservation depends on changing mindsets, OFYI youth act as environmental educators. They take the message of conservation into classrooms and rural communities, simplifying complex concepts about biodiversity loss and climate change. By raising awareness about the dangers of poaching and unsustainable logging, they are cultivating the next generation of forest defenders.

3. Advocacy and Policy Influence OFYI ensures that young people have a seat at the table where decisions about their future are made. They engage in robust advocacy, lobbying national authorities and international bodies for stronger forest governance. They serve as the vital link between grassroots realities and high-level policy, ensuring the voice of the youth—and the silent voice of the forest—is heard clearly.

4. Bridging Tradition and Innovation Perhaps their most unique strength is their ability to bridge the gap between ancestral knowledge and modern solutions. They respect traditional forest management practices while embracing green innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship. They are exploring ways to make living with the forest economically viable, proving that conservation and development can go hand in hand.

Conclusion The engagement of the One Forest Youth Initiative in Cameroon is a testament to a new era of environmental activism. They are not waiting for permission to save their environment. By combining energy, education, and concrete action, OFYI youth are demonstrating that they are not merely inheritors of the planet's challenges, but the most capable architects of its sustainable future.
