FCDA CAMEROON MIX CROPPING

and Justification # Agriculture remains the back bone of many rural communities, providing food, employment, and income. Initially, this project was launched as a cassava farm dedicated to Garri production. However, due to financial constraints, the project could not proceed as planned. To optimize land use and mitigate financial loss, the cassava farm was converted into across-farming system involving cassava, groundnuts, and maize(corn). This approach ensures food security, diversified harvest, and better use of natural resources while keeping the original vision partially intact.

Primary Objective:To increase food production and income through a sustainable cross-farming system.

Specific Objectives:
To maintain and expand cassava production
To cultivate groundnuts and maize as complementary crops
To improve soil fertility through crop rotation
To eventually return to Garri processing when financially feasible

Planted #
Cassava: Local high-yielding variety
Groundnuts: Short-cycle variety adapted to local soil
Maize (Corn): Drought-resistant hybrid variety

Undertaken included #

Clearing and preparation of the land, purchasing seeds and planting materials, planting cassava in ridges, intercropping maize and groundnuts, regular weeding and pest-control, and application of organic manure and compost.

challenges faced included #
- Initial capital was insufficient for full Garri processing setup.
- High cost of farm inputs (fertilizers, pesticides)
- Lack of irrigation or consistent rainfall
Manual labor limitations
-Pest infestations during the early maize stage

Some Achievements registered so far -
- Successful transition to across-farming model
-Good germination and growth rates for all crops
-Enhanced soil structure due to rotational planting
- Community involvement and knowledge sharing
- Prospective market connections for harvested crops

Expected Harvest and Yields (Estimates) stand at 12–15tons of Cassava (1 hectare) estimated to be sold at $2,000–$3,000, 600 - 800kg of Groundnut (⅕ hectare) estimated to be sold at $500–$700, 1,000–1,200kg of Maize, cultivated on a ⅕ hectare which is est

Primary Objective:To increase food production and income through a sustainable cross-farming system.

Specific Objectives:
To maintain and expand cassava production
To cultivate groundnuts and maize as complementary crops
To improve soil fertility through crop rotation
To generate income through the sale of harvested products
To eventually return to Garri processing when financially feasible

Description #
Farm Size: Total Land Area: (e.g 2 hectares) divided as follows:
- Cassava:1 hectare
- Groundnuts:0.5 hectare• Maize (Corn):0.5hectare

Planted #
Cassava: Local high-yielding variety
Groundnuts: Short-cycle variety adapted to local soil
Maize (Corn): Drought-resistant hybrid variety

Undertaken included #

Clearing and preparation of the land, purchasing seeds and planting materials, planting cassava in ridges, intercropping maize and groundnuts, regular weeding and pest-control, and application of organic manure and compost.

Some challenges faced included -
- Initial capital was insufficient for full Garri processing setup.
- High cost of farm inputs (fertilizers, pesticides)
- Lack of irrigation or consistent rainfall
Manual labor limitations
-Pest infestations during the early maize stage

Some Achievements registered so far -

And Sales Strategy #
- Local village markets and roadside vendors
- Selling in bulk to wholesalers
Processing cassava into dry chips if Garri is not yet viable
- Direct-to-consumer sales during market days

Plan #
- Reinvest part of proceeds into acquiring better tools and inputs
- Apply for small grants or NGO agricultural funding
- Introduce small-scale irrigation using water tanks or boreholes
- Gradually build up capital to resume Garri processing in phases
- Train and involve youth and women for long-term labor sustainability

Plans #
-Resume full Garri processing unit (grater, presser, fryer)
-Expand the cassava field by 1 additional hectare
- Introduce value-added groundnut products (paste, oil)
- Form a cooperative with neighboring farmers for better market leverage

# Conclusion #
Despite setbacks, this project remains a testimony of adaptability, determination, and resourcefulness. By switching to a mixed farming model, the project not only avoided collapse but gained strength through diversity. With modest support or funding, it can grow into a sustainable farming and processing enterprise.
