Ramadan is not starvation. It is training.
The word Sawm, fasting, was also used by Arabs when training horses for battle. They would restrict a horse’s food and water, not to weaken it, but to discipline and strengthen it for the fight ahead. If the horse came out weaker, the training had failed.
Ramadan works the same way. The real battle is not against food. It is against your tongue, your eyes, your ego, and your desires. This month is a spiritual training camp designed to strengthen your character and your relationship with Allah.
If Ramadan leaves you only hungry and thirsty, the training was missed. The goal is to leave the month stronger than when you entered it.
