Open Field is a Pittsburgh-based 501.c.3 nonprofit organization and registered association in Meme Division (Southwest Region, Cameroon, Africa) with the mission to improve the lives and futures of youth through sport. Open Field was founded by American, Justin Forzano, and Cameroonian, Peter Ngwane. The two met in 2006 during Forzano’s first trip to Cameroon, Africa as an engineering student working on rural development projects.

CELEBRATING THE GIRL CHILD!
As we reflect on the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated on 11 October, we are reminded of the importance of empowering girls to dream big, develop their talents, and become leaders in their communities.

Through our female football tournament under the theme “Kick for Climate Action and Entrepreneurship,” we are using football as a powerful tool to empower girls, promote environmental awareness, and equip them with entrepreneurial skills for a brighter and more sustainable future. Rosemary is more than just a brilliant student; she is also a talented soccer player and a source of inspiration to other young girls. She actively encourages her female peers to take sports seriously while reminding them that sports and education can go hand in hand.

For Rosemary, exercising is not a distraction from school—it makes her feel stronger, more energetic, and eager to study. She believes that when her body is active, her mind becomes more focused, helping her understand her lessons even better. Skills Beyond the Pitch! ⚽

Last week, as part of our ongoing Girls Tournament, we organized a practical workshop for our female participants on how to produce locally made liquid soap.

With the tournament centered around Menstrual Health, Hygiene and Sanitation, we believe it is important to go beyond football and equip young girls with practical, income-generating skills. 🧼✨

The training gives participants a skill they can use to start small businesses, generate income, and make quality liquid soap for use at home, helping them save money while promoting better hygiene and sanitation.

OUR GIRLS ARE PLAYING WITH PURPOSE!

Our girls’ football tournament is running with so much passion, determination and confidence, inspired by the recent success of our Indomitable Lionesses at the WAFCON. 🇨🇲🏆

They are determined to dream big, work hard and succeed just like the Lionesses!

But this competition is about more than football. At the end of the tournament, we will empower these young girls with lucrative entrepreneurial skills, including training on how to collect plastic waste and transform it into useful eco-bricks.

The Boys Tournament has come to a successful end. Beyond the football, this tournament was a powerful platform for fighting climate change, promoting inclusion, and empowering boys, girls, and persons with disabilities with practical knowledge on how to transform plastic waste into environmentally friendly bricks.

But the greatest victory was unity. Whether a team won or lost on the pitch, every participant came together, built friendships, shared experiences, and stood united for a cleaner and more sustainable community.
Football brought us together, while climate action gave us a common purpose.
Together, we can turn waste into opportunity and passion into positive action for our planet!

From the Boys’ Finals to the Girls’ Grand Finale!
Last week, we successfully rounded up with the boys’ finals, and we are now looking forward to concluding the girls’ tournament.
As we approach the final stage, we are also excited to activate the second and final phase of our FIFA Foundation-funded project — where participants will be trained on how to transform waste plastic into eco-friendly bricks, turning environmental challenges into opportunities for a greener and more sustainable community.
