𝗨=𝗨: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄
What if one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs in the fight against HIV remained widely misunderstood?
Findings from 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛'𝘀 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 from Research and advocacy for community health (REACH) HIV working group reveal a substantial gap in public understanding:
𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘆-𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝟰𝟱.𝟱%) of respondents believe that a person living with HIV who is on effective treatment and has an 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 can still transmit HIV through unprotected s*x.
In contrast, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟯𝟭.𝟴% know that this statement is false.
Yet the scientific evidence is unequivocal.
💡 𝗨=𝗨 (𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 = 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲) means that a person living with HIV who takes their treatment consistently and maintains an undetectable viral load 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗛𝗜𝗩 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁.
This groundbreaking scientific discovery, confirmed by multiple large international studies, has transformed HIV prevention, improved the quality of life of people living with HIV, and has become a powerful tool in the fight against HIV-related stigma.
However, these findings remind us of an important truth: 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱.
Every misconception fuels fear. Every evidence-based fact helps build a more informed, inclusive, and compassionate society.
