Human Is Right NGO, represented by its Director, Blaise Chamango, participated in the official launch of the African Grassroots Observatory on Critical and Strategic Minerals, a regional initiative bringing together civil society actors and stakeholders from Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Chad. The launch marked a significant step toward strengthening regional cooperation, transparency, and accountability in the governance of critical and strategic mineral resources across Africa. The Observatory seeks to amplify grassroots voices, monitor the social and environmental impacts of mineral exploitation, and promote inclusive dialogue between governments, local communities, private sector actors, and civil society organizations.
The participation of Human Is Right NGO reflects the growing commitment of civil society organizations to advancing social justice, human rights, and sustainable development within the Great Lakes Region. As demand for critical minerals continues to increase globally, the role of civil society remains essential in ensuring that local populations benefit equitably from natural resource wealth while protecting communities from displacement, environmental degradation, exploitation, and conflict-related abuses. Through advocacy, community engagement, policy monitoring, and regional collaboration, organizations such as Human Is Right NGO contribute significantly to promoting transparency, protecting vulnerable populations, and strengthening the wellbeing and socio-economic resilience of communities affected by extractive industries.

On this International Human Rights Day 2025, Human Is Right reaffirms with unwavering conviction that dignity, justice, and freedom are not privileges, they are the birthright of every human being. At a time when conflicts, repression, discrimination, and digital abuses continue to threaten the lives and liberties of millions, we stand united to demand accountability from all leaders, institutions, and systems that perpetuate injustice.
We refuse to normalize violence, silence, or exclusion in any form. Today, we amplify the voices of those who are targeted for speaking truth, defending democracy, and protecting the vulnerable. We call on governments, civil society, and global citizens to rise with courage and commitment to protect human rights for all, everywhere, every day. Our collective humanity depends on it.

We have documented over 6 cases of women whose nudes were shared by third parties as a means to put pressure on them.

Gender-based violence, including the non-consensual sharing of women’s intimate images, is a grave violation of dignity and human rights. Such actions contravene Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which protects everyone from unlawful attacks on their honour and reputation.
They are further condemned under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which obliges states to prevent gender-based violence in all forms.

Most national cybercrime and privacy laws criminalize the publication of private images without consent, recognizing it as a form of digital abuse. We must hold perpetrators accountable and strengthen protections to ensure women’s safety, privacy, and equality online.

Article 74 of Law n°2010/012 of 21 December 2010 on cyber criminality in Cameroon penalizes with 1 to 2 years imprisonment and a fine of 1 000 000 to 5 000 000 FCFA anyone who, without consent, “fixes, records or transmits” private or confidential electronic data that invades the private life of another.

The death of an opposition leader while in state custody is an alarming and unacceptable violation of fundamental human rights, and it demands immediate and unequivocal condemnation. No individual should lose their life for exercising political opinion or challenging governmental authority. Cameroon, as a State Party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), is obligated under Articles 6 and 9 to protect the right to life and guarantee liberty and security of every person, including those deprived of their liberty. Likewise, Cameroon’s ratification of the Convention against Torture (CAT) imposes binding obligations to prevent torture, ill-treatment, and any conditions of detention that could endanger a person’s physical or mental integrity. The state’s failure to uphold these obligations represents a grave breach of international law and a profound moral failure.

Furthermore, Cameroon’s commitments under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, particularly Articles 4, 5, 6, and 9, require the protection of life, dignity, freedom from arbitrary arrest or detention, and freedom of expression. The death of a political opponent in custody raises serious questions about the state’s compliance with these regional and international standards, undermining democratic space and eroding public trust. We call for an independent, transparent, and credible investigation, accountability for all those responsible, and immediate reforms to ensure that no citizen is ever again subjected to fatal repression for their political beliefs. The government must honor its treaty obligations, not only in word, but in action.
