The United States has officially lifted the 15% tariffs placed earlier in the year on cocoa and other key farm exports from Ghana, the African nation's foreign minister confirmed this morning. This policy shift, effective as of November 13, 2025, follows a new executive order from US President Donald Trump. Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the update on his social media, noting that the reversal could boost Ghana's revenue by an estimated US$60 million annually. The policy reversal covers cocoa beans, cashew nuts, avocado, banana, mango, pineapple, coconut, ginger, peppers, and more. With Ghana exporting around 78,000 metric tons of cocoa to the US each year, it could be a game-changer for the economy.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as Deputy Minister for Education and her son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa, as Health Minister. Former President Jakaya Kikwete’s son, Ridhwani Kikwete, has also been named Minister of Public Service Management and Good Governance. Suluhu Hassan won October’s election with nearly 98% of the vote. The new cabinet will be sworn in on Tuesday. Her choices reflect a wider trend in parts of Africa where leaders elevate relatives or close allies. In Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni has family members in key posts, including First Lady Janet Museveni as education minister and their son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, leading the defense forces. In Rwanda, President Paul Kagame has denied grooming his daughter, Ange Kagame, for politics, though his sons serve in the military.
