A Milestone Achievement 🎓

The Center for Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa (CEPSDA) is proud to announce a landmark academic achievement by its Founder and Director, Dr. Stephen Ajanga Obah ECHOCHU.

On 11 December 2025, Dr. ECHOCHU was among the distinguished graduates of the University of Buea, where he officially earned the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Conflict Resolution. This achievement marks the successful culmination of years of rigorous academic training, in-depth research, and unwavering commitment to the study and practice of peacebuilding, conflict management, and sustainable development.

Dr. ECHOCHU’s doctoral journey reflects not only intellectual excellence but also a deep passion for addressing complex conflicts, particularly within African contexts. His scholarship contributes meaningfully to contemporary debates on peacekeeping, conflict transformation, and security governance, while reinforcing his long-standing engagement in community development, policy research, and academic mentorship.

This milestone is a significant personal accomplishment and a moment of pride for CEPSDA, as it further strengthens the organization’s intellectual leadership, research capacity, and impact-driven mission across Africa and beyond.

Milestone Achievement

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Dr. Echochu Stephen, Founder and Director of CEPSDA, successfully defended his doctoral degree at ASTI Hall, University of Buea.

Dr. Echochu presented his thesis titled **"The Hybrid Model of Peacekeeping: The UN and the AU in Somalia"** before a distinguished panel of five esteemed professors. The panel included Chairperson Professor Atangcho Njii, External Examiner Professor Herman Arrey, Internal Examiner Professor Alvin Buma, Member Professor Irene Sama-Land, and Supervisor Professor Kiven James Kewir.

The objective of Dr. Echochu's study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the hybrid peacekeeping mission implemented by the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) in Somalia, specifically the **African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM)**. Launched in 2007 under UN Resolution 1744, this mission aimed to protect civilians and foster peace and stability in Somalia. Despite years of intervention, the conflict in Somalia remains unresolved.

In his defense, Dr. Echochu proposed sound recommendations for the UN, AU, and the Somali government to effectively address the ongoing conflict dynamics in the region.

This achievement marks a significant contribution to the fields of peacekeeping and conflict resolution

CEPSDA YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Youth empowerment is the process of equipping young individuals with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to take charge of their lives and actively participate in building their communities. By fostering their voices and promoting their potential, we create a generation that is not only capable of driving positive change but also resilient in the face of challenges.

To that effect, and organised a peacebuilding training workshop for youths in the Buea Municipality on Saturday the 7th of June 2025 at the MINJECT HALL in Buea. The 45 youths selected from different higher institutions in Buea were drilled on the theme: Enhancing Youth Role in Peace Building " with Objectives.

-To enhance Youth, Peace and security (YPS) agenda
-To promote Peacebuilding in Mind Education
-To create awareness on the importance of Peacebuilding among stakeholders and its satisfaction at communal and educational sectorial levels
-To promote and ensure sustainability in peacebuilding and Conflict Management
-To counter Hate Speech and Misinformation
-To foster collaboration and practical
application of knowledge.

PEACEBUILDING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

On the 6th of March 2025, the Director of CEPSDA, Mr..Echochu Stephen, facilitated a seminar organized by in Buea on Peacebuilding, Nonviolence, and Non-radicalization. The event brought together diverse youth leaders to discuss strategies for promoting nonviolent conflict resolution and preventing radicalization among vulnerable populations. Through interactive workshops and expert panels, participants explored effective techniques and developed actionable plans tailored in promoting peacebuilding and nonviolence within their communities.

The workshop emphasized the critical role of youth in fostering dialogue and collaboration for sustainable peace. Participants left with a renewed commitment to implement the strategies learned and to engage their communities in promoting peacebuilding nonviolence and de-radicalization. This event marks a significant step towards building a more peaceful society, and we look forward to continued efforts in this vital area.

Research and Peacekeeping in African

The Director and Founder of , Mr Echochu Stephen, who is also a PhD. fellow at the University of Buea, South West Region of Cameroon, was received by the Public Agenda on the 21st of August 2024 at Mogadishu Somalia.

Mr Stephen had a Focus Group Discussion with the team of on Peaceking in Africa, with a particular interest in peacekeeping in Somalia. The FGD covered the role of the African Union Mission in Somalia . They discussed the role played by AMISOM in the conflict in Somalia, the successes recorded, and the challenges faced by this mission in attaining its goals in Somalia. After critically discussing the successes and challenges of the peacekeeping mission, they developed proposals on how to better the peacekeeping mission in Somalia and Africa in general.

Special thank to the management of the Somali Public Agenda for the audience granted and for their wonderful contributions throughout the FGD. Their rich inputs and contributions have greatly beefed up the research.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY!

On the 6th of June 2020, the Center for Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa (CEPSDA) embarked on a tree planting exercise in TOLE to commemorate World Environment Day 2020. The organization planted more than 100 trees in Tole, a village in Buea, South West Region of Caneroon.

Today, after four years, the Director/ CEO, Mr. Echochu Stephen, with some members, went to TOLE to evaluate the trees and see the level of growth. It was pleasing to see that the trees have grown so well, and they are already beautifying the street of TOLE and providing shades for the TOLE people.

On behalf of the management of CEPSDA, the CEO expressed heartfelt satisfaction to all stakeholders and most especially the population of TOLE who harnessed the trees to maturity.

The Founder and Director of Center for Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa , Mr ECHOCHU Stephen has successfully completed an exhaustive but interesting three days capacity building on Peace Building, Conflict Prevention and Violent Extremism.

The training was organised by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding , under the Research & Action for Peace Network (REcAP Network) Project in partnership with the policy Institute, and was funded by the European Union. The workshop was aimed to build capabilities of CSOs Leaders and Peace Builders in Cameroon .

The participants were trained on pragmatic measures in resolving conflict and how they can effectively prevent conflict. The workshop already enhanced their capacity on peacebuilding, Conflict Prevention and violent extremism.

Much thanks go to the organisers and partners of this project for identifying as one of the leading CSOs on Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding in Cameroon. We also thank the policy Institute and the amazing facilitators from the West African Network for Peacebuilding for a job well done.

The World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023.

In Commemorating the World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023, the Center for Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa (CEPSDA) organised an event for the young girls in Tole Bwiuyuku, a village in the Buea Sub-Division, South West Region of Cameroon. The event brought together young girls within the age of 11 to 25 to be schooled about Menstruation, and Menstrual Hygiene.

The main speaker of the day was a Health Expert Dr. Mbuame who drilled the young women about menstuation, how to maintain a good menstrual hygiene, and the effects of bad menstrual hygiene.

The over 150 young ladies from Tole who attended the event received sanitary kit from CEPSDA which comprises of, pads, toilets tissues and other items.

In all, the participants where very happy and thank the team of CEPSDA for being their August guest during this period. They also thank the donors and partners of CEPSDA for their support.

On behave of the Management of CEPSDA, we thank everyone who assisted in one way or the other to see that the project was successful. Much gratitude goes to the Rev Pastor of Presbytarian church Tole for granting us the space to carry out this project.
